I seem to remember that we were forever about to sign Steve Bull.

Early 90s was Dalian and Dean Saunders.

Mid 90s Yorkie was our main man and for all his faults Savo combined well as a foil and could also chip in with 10 or so a season. Tommy Johnson and Joachim good squad strikers.

It was around 89 to 91 when we were most heavily linked to Bull, under SGT and Dr Jo.  We ended up with Tony Cascarino and later Gary Penrice. Petsonally, I think Bully would have done well at the Villa

I probably would have backed him to do better than Cascarino and Penrice to be fair.

Steve Bull is without a shadow of a doubt the worst after dinner speaker I have ever witnessed, even worse than the guy telling hilarious anecdotes about his time as an Air Traffic Controller. The dreadfulness of it was magnified by him being on a double bill with Don Goodman, who is interesting, intelligent and articulate.

You’ve never been regaled by Michael Fish have you? 20 minutes of utter bollocks, which includes making his faulty hurricane forecast into the most boring anecdote ever. Unfortunately I hadn’t had enough drink to heckle at a work do.

Best ever for me were Barry Cryer and quite remarkably Gyles Brandreth!!

Try listening to Dicky Bird after a dinner: quite the most boring fella ever.

My father in law was an avid tatter and met Steve Bull quite a few times, he reported that far from being a lifelong Wolves fan he grew up supporting Liverpool.

Maybe I was being harsh besmirching his legendary status with Wolves. I am sure I would love a bloke who got a couple of hundred goals for us. But....

He achieved fuck all in his career. Never played in the top flight and his biggest achievement scoring wise was a couple in England friendlies. He bottled the top flight for a long time, never outscored another player in Division 2, is a money hungry dick to spend time around personally etc.

Twenty grand a week sounds like a kids wage now but back then he sucked that up for ten years or so. Sheared at Blackburn was only on 25k. Christ only knows how much of Jack Hayward's fortune he personally trousered in wages and image rights.

They ended up being a club run for him.

In modern parlance, he had a decade of being paid what we are chucking at John Terry this season.

Two things sum up Steve Bull off the pitch. He signed a six year contract and within months asked for it to be over four years with the same total money. A few months after that the contract was back to six years again, so he'd managed to get a 50% pay rise. 

Then there was his testimonial, and never was so much blood got out of a stone. There was a match, a video, a This Is Your Life-type night at the Civic, which later came out on video as well, dinners and countless supporters club functions. All of this complete with heavy pressure selling and all designed to make a rich man richer at the expense of people predominantly living in one of the poorest regions in the country.

The couple of Wolves fans I heard snippets from on WM tonight were quite reasonable in accepting their team was second best and also balanced enough to put one defeat into perspective and not criticise their team too much. Far more well balanced than what I saw on their forum on Saturday night or the kind of stuff we hear from noses after a game against us.

I don't know if Pat said it but a couple of them were congratulating us on winning our"cup final" If they meant it they're massively delusional and borderline mental. Maybe it's just a pathetic attempt at trying to gain some kind of positive. Either way it's quite funny to hear.

I heard that too. I think we all know who's cup final it was. Same as any West Midlands team who play The Villa.

There was an article- in the Arsenal away match programme 1990/91 of all places-  saying we had agreed a deal for a striker in the second half of that season. But if the move took place, the fans of said club were liable to riot.

Don't think he was ever on 20K a week. We weren't paying anyone 20K a week back then. I do remember him supposedly on similar money to our strikers, but back then that was 'only' 5-8K a week.
