Fabian Delph was announced as the man-of-the-match over the tannoy after the win over West Ham.

And the statistics back up that decision, with the midfielder proving immensely influential in the central ground, going forward and tracking back.

Delph was No.2 for passes - behind Mark Noble - with forty-three successful from forty-seven made. Charles N'Zogbia was No.4 with thirty-one successful from thirty-six made.

Delph was No.2 for take-ons - behind Mohamed Diame - with four successful out of seven made.

Delph was No.1 for tackles with five successful out of five made. Matt Lowton was No.3 with four successful out of five made. Ashley Westwood was No.5 with three successful out of three made.

Delph was No.1 for interceptions with six. Ron Vlaar was No.4 with three.

Christian Benteke was No.1 for shots with three in total, two on target and one goal. N'Zogbia was No.2 with two in total, one on target and one goal.

N'Zogbia was No.1 for attacking third passes with seventeen successful from twenty-one made.

N'Zogbia was No.4 for chances created with two. Westwood was joint No.1 with Lowton for blocks with two. Darren Bent and Vlaar were joint No.2 with one.

Ciaran Clark was No.1 for clearances with four successful out of fifteen made. Vlaar was No.2 with four successful out of thirteen made. Nathan Baker was No.3 with five successful out of ten made.

Benteke was No.2 for aerial duels - behind Andy Carroll - with seven successful out of ten made. Clark was No.3 with four successful out of four made. Baker was No.4 with three successful out of eight made. Vlaar was No.5 with three successful out of seven made.

Interestingly, No.1 pass combination for Villa - No.2 overall - was Jordan Bowery to Lowton with eleven.

Delph. I don't get him. Stupid, reckless challenges. Over runs when in possession. Positioning is poor. Likely to make mistakes. cant deny his 100% effort, but he's just not good enough. I know he got MOTM, but everyone around me in the Holte was very surprised with that.
You couldn't be more wrong if you agreed with everything  fat Sam spouted!
Delph was our most influential player today. Fantastic work rate and some telling intervention when we were  under press topped with some very good attacking balls. Rightly named MotM.

Just at Birmingham airport....had a really enjoyable day (apart from almost missing the start of the game and having to run to the stadium because my uncle took a wrong turn).

Massive three points and we defended those corners. Phew!!!!

Also, nice to meet you Dave W.

West Ham were fucking awful, made it easy for us.

Thought Delph had a good game.

Sounds like something you'd hear from an MLS commentator.

The bits where, on a 50/50 ball, 2 players on opposite sides don gloves and spar for 3 rounds with the referee as umpire.
I thought everybody knew that.

Thank god.

But are we ever going to work out how to kill a game off in the last ten minutes. Keeping the ball would be a start as opposed to hoofing it down the pitch to give the opposing team another chance to come back at us. It really is basic stuff.

Still 3 points on the board, a step in the right direction.

Nathan Baker was outstanding today, true commitment from the lad.

Not sure on that, he did well when he was in the box and the ball went in the box. However when he was on the left he was pretty horrible, giving away stupid fouls and letting far too many crosses come in.

So does Bennett.

At least

At least Baker is a big unit so he's good to have defending those set pieces.

Well after the loss of both my parents over Christmas, I now have a tiny tear in my eye and a small smile to match.

Thankyou Aston Villa
Very sorry to hear that Tuscan Villa. I am pleased you found some solace in the win today.

Baker was decent, but was lucky as he was very very late when he clattered Tomkins. If that was with his feet and not his head he'd have been booked at last.

And I still think that not only are Norwich in this but West Ham too. They're abysmal away from home and have Spurs and Man Utd up next at home.
