I had the pleasure of bumping into my boyhood hero after the game on Saturday against Man U. He was coming out of the press area in the Trinity Rd stand. We chatted briefly and he signed an autograph for my son. I said " you are a true legend" he said " I don't know about that". Such a modest man, if it was'nt for that injury he would surely have gone on to greater things either with Villa or representing one of the top teams in Europe. The sad thing was he was limping and what also surprised me was that he walked through the Trinity Rd stand unnoticed. If The medical treatment was as good then as it is today I would like to think he's career could have been extended. Gary could have gone on to represent England and keep Lineker out of the England team. If you look at the players which have won the Bravo award for the best young player in Europe you will realise how highly rated he was. Thanks Gary for the memories and in my eyes you are a legend.

I know what you mean Dave, over the years I've had the pleasure of bumping into a number of former players in and around the ground. They nearly normally all go unnoticed. I remember chatting to Tony Morley and getting his autograph as he walked through the car park behind the North Stand. As he was signing the autograph a few middle aged fans asked who's that!

What really pisses me off about it is the way in which ignoring the heroes of '82 was one of the highest crimes on the charge sheet against Doug (not that it wasn't a disgrace) yet they can walk down Witton Lane on matchday without being noticed. It makes me wonder how much of it was a genuine anger and how much just another stick to beat Doug with.

I worshipped everyone of the 82 team and still do however a couple of years ago I met Dennis in the corporate reception area in Trinity said hello and asked him to sign my match ticket. Dennis was as good a gold and we had a chat and he said to me you want Tony's autograph as well and pointed to a "man" close by! I honestly did not recognise Tony. He has changed a lot with age.

Regarding Villa legends and their true worth, I recall the first time I met Tony Morley, Des Bremner, Paul Birch and Sid Cowans after an Old Stars game (apologies to our other former players, it's not meant how it sounds). I was so excited I could hardly speak.

After an Everton home game a couple of years ago, the hostess on the Villa Bus I was travelling home on happened to mention she met Ian Taylor in the Trinity entrance and he signed her teamsheet. She asked if anybody wanted it, and I was the only one to put my hand up. Tayls may not have the trophy haul of others, but me and my mate still followed him like a couple of lovesick teenagers until he spoke to us before the Demolition Derby.
