to add a bit to dave.woodhalls reply a front 2 of withe and shaw and morley at left wing can rule the div 1 then rule europe but at the same time we watch england fail in spain 82 makes my blood boil just imagine that 3 and add certain mr mortimer aided by super sid cowans and it makes you wonder what could of been.oh yes and kenny swain at right back, the list over the years can go on and on cant it.

That's what's always got me about England, it's almost as if they have a North West remit to fulfil. It's been the same for decades. I don't give a shit about it anymore though - only thing England does for Villa is turn our players' heads.

I'd also like to add how much of a disgrace it is how the legends are ignored. More than once i've been chatting to Dave before a game and one of them walks past and virtually no one notices them. Meanwhile i'm turning into a stuttering idiot just by the mere sight of them and have to stop myself from shouting out like a blubbering girl "it's Dennis Mortimer!!!" Or "Fuck me that's Des Bremner" etc and I have to force myself not to be 10 again by going up and asking for their autograph.

Strange to say but we foreign fans are more lucky. We are favoured and encouraged to meet the Villa legends and ao every year we have the chance to meet the likes of Tony, Sid, Dennis, Des, Mc Naught, Ian Taylor  or others in the Gordon Cowans suite.

In answer to the OP: Brian, then Gary.

In answer to the recognition thing, of the 81/82 crew, I think I'd struggle to recognise Gary Williams.

As to what I'd say, mostly it would be an utterly heartfelt Thank You. Certain players have left an indelible mark on me that you can't think of them without bringing to mind a picture of them in action with all the associated wonderful memories.

Certain players haven't of course, and for them I feel regret that they had the chance to play for us and I didn't :-)

Just to add that the thank you would also be extend to not just the stars but all toes who've slogged away, giving whatever they had to give, for example Kevin Gage who always gave everything, even when the crowd were on his back (something I never understood).

I loved Gagey, he was basically an honest pro, but every now and then he'd do something really classy.

Brian Little i always say is my all time favourite player because of some of the things he could do with a football and possibly due to the intense rivalry between BL and 'The Devil's Own' from the 'Sty' at that time so i suppose my opinion a little tainted cos of that rivalry as i would have to put Gary Shaw as No.1 inside forward, Little second and Yorkie with the bronze.
