I first encountered the 'applauding the opposition scoring as a means of expressing your frustration at our own shitness' phenomenon as Liverpool took the lead on the last day of the Holte. That's how I interpreted it as a 13 year old at the time anyway, but then again I was in the Doug Ellis upper. We roared back second half, and realised that maybe Dwight Yorke might amount to something afterall...

I am not going to applaud oppposition goals - especially at Villa Park. There always seem to be some group of twats in the corner prepared to do that. What makes it worse is none of them seem regulars whereas I hardly miss a home game.

i recal several years ago Gerrad being applauded off after being subbed by our support after beating us pretty much on his own.

it definitely should be allowed. I remember the Portsmouth fans staying till the end after being pumelled by Arsenal and giving a standing ovation. That type of spirit rekindled my love for football.

On our last visit to Highbury Thierry Henry gave a masterclass and we in turn gave him a standing ovation when he was substituted. That wasn't so much applauding an opposition goal as recognising genius when we saw it.
