It's a no to Tim Cahill for me. He was always a very average footballer but a great scoring midfielder. Now he doesn't seem to score much - perhaps he's lost that prodigious leap - I can't see the point really. Would be a sticking plaster and not a very effective one.

Linked with a RM from Millwall

Seems to fit the bill nicely , creative midfielder who can add goals .

Charlton appear to be expecting Villa to go back in for Dale Stephens.

Wasn't Westwood our backup plan if we didn't sign Stephens?  If he's better than Westwood, he'll be more than welcome.

Was he not more attacking? I get the distinct impression that Charlton want to sell and make some cash to spend, and Stephens is the one they had interest in during the summer, he has not pulled up trees, and now they are trying to get the cash in. Not so sure Lambert will fall for it.

I think we should go for Craig Gardner

I don't, he's not up to it.

If Gardner appears in January then I'd be perfectly happy with it, as based on his track record there would be a reason for signing him and I'd be confident for the reasons for his signing.

Or put it this way: McLeish or O'Neill signing Gardner for a club = bad, Lambert signing Gardner for a club = fine.

Gardner is very ordinary midfielder and I don't think he'd be improvement on any of our midfielders except that he has a mean long shot. We have enough squad players and his salary would probably be 40k+.

I'd be very surprised if it were.

I can't imagine it would have been much more than £20k at us or Blues and considering they'd just been relegated I don't think Sunderland would have had to offer a massive increase.

If we were to sign him, I'd expect we'd be looking at circa £25k per week.

Obviously there's a lot of supposition in there.

I remember we were linked to the beautifully named Wilfred Bony in the last window, he might've been a fall back option if Benteke hadn't have gone through.

Seems to be linked to a few clubs now and played for the Ivory Coast in their last friendly so one to revisit?

Craig Gardner is no longer at this club for a reason.  Deeply average.  Why do we want to go backwards?

I thought Gardner was worth holding onto at the time. O.k he wanted to play but he was better as back up than Sidwell and is much more of a goal threat than NRC.

Wouldn't want him back now though.
