I thought Ireland was good and bannan was excellent. N'Zogbia was his usual self though.

That's the difference with N'Zogbia - the other two can play well given tactics, circumstances and mindset, but Zog  almost seems willfully playing badly.

NZogbia always seems surprised to run out of pitch.

He's like a blind Ashley Young.

Just got back. Job well done tonight. It's pleasing to see more of a passing game taking hold, everyone always seems to be looking for a pass to feet rather than a hoof. Ireland was the standout for me. Despite being a wrongun with his antics off the pitch he's the one guy we have with the vision and quality to unlock a defence with one pass. That ball through to Bent in the first half was brilliant. If we could get him back to his man city form it could make the difference this season because in theory him and Bent should be a match made in heaven.

I couldn't believe how bitter the tranmere fans were though. It seems like 94 still really hurts, and did anyone hear the one on talkshite? Saying how we were no better than the league 1 sides they'd played and how we'll get relegated. It was good to hear someone put him in his place and tell him who actually played for us tonight though.

Another thing about the attendance - I thought they were closing the Upper Trinity?  looked like a lot of people had relocated to one block to the left of the directors'/posh seats but there were still some people in the Upper

I was surprised to see people up there, too.

Just a quick mention for Graham Burke, I thought he did well in his 15 minute cameo and looked very comfortable when recieving the ball in tight spaces.

Ireland was excellent tonight, Bannan ok but still wastes too much good possession. Baker pretty solid but not with ball at his feet. Burke looked very comfy on the ball when he came on - not fazed at all.

We still need at least 3 quality players, including someone who can cross the ball! To one of our players preferably!

A much needed win and we are safely into the hat for the next round

Nice to see Bent on the score sheet again and hopefully with a few additions to the squad before the transfer deadline we can kick on and start to move up the table

Good result all round. Some nice stuff especially in the second half. Difficult to pick a player of the match though as no-one really stood out for me. CN'Z was, well, err...

Great win to get at this time.

One thing though, attendance 15,319...when was there last an attendance that low for a first class game at Villa Park?...

Wednesday 21st September, 1994: Wigan Athletic, Coca Cola Cup Round 2, 1st Leg, 5-0, 12,433.

...and tonight's game was played 2.5 years to the day since we played Man United in the same competition at Wembley in front of 88,596.

I remember that Wigan match. They were bottom of Div 4 IIRC and wore Inter strips and Nii Lamptey looked a player as we strolled it 5-0.

Us old farts remember plenty of gates lower than 15K.
