I was 12 when this was played, I remember setting my alarm to listen to it on the radio. It started at something stupid like 2am. I'm sure it was a school day the next day. For some reason I remember Tony Butler while I was listening, but I may be wrong.

It was definitely early Sunday morning our time, I seem to recall listening on the radio at about 6am but might be wrong.

I never realised one of the linesmen was from the Tamworth Sunday League until watching that clip (4:08)

Tony Butler was hosting and "Gorgeous" George Gavin was in the far east reporting via a phone line I think.

You'd think Butler was conquering Everest the way he went on about it, just 'cos he had to broadcast in the early hours. I recall he played "In The Wee Small Hours" by Sinatra during the show.

It was shit but still light years better than Keys and fuckin' Gray.

I was twelve and listened to Butler and Gavin on the radio whilst decorating the Christmas tree. I remember being gutted that we had missed out on being champions of the world. In my memory it was played at about 2am to 4am Sunday our time and I think ITV showed highlights later on that afternoon.

I remember going out on the Saturday night and listening to the game on BRMB when I got in - IIRC around 1 am as posters have said above.

The following weekend Football Focus had a report on a Liverpool trip to Africa for a couple of friendles (I think they had a free weekend as they were de to play us but we were in Tokyo) but showed not one second of coverage of our game v Penarol in Tokyo.

As an aside, I met a Japanese client in Tokyo 18 months ago and he was at that game. It was his first ever game of football and he still has the programme.

I recall going out on the town with a few Villa mates and then going back to one of their houses, in Perry Barr, to listen to the commentary on BRMB with us all gathered around the transistor radio; it was a bit of a damp squib with us losing, after a good night out, and as others have said I'm pretty sure it started at 2.00 a.m. on the Sunday.

I have a copy of the programme, which cost £5 at the time, and which is available on the latest Sports Programmes Offer Catalogue for a minimum bid of £50; not a bad investment!

Afterwards Butler had a phone-in. One of the callers bemoaned our typical British 'good loser' attitude. Another was a certain Black Country Villa fan known to many of us saying "We'em in the pub still."

I remember Butler with his bloody "prayer mat" . It started at about 2 AM. God it was awful listening.
