I always thought of Lew Chatterly as a real Villa man. Brummie born, he left in 1971 so his playing time unfortunately coincided with the big decline and two relegations. He was still the top scorer in 66/67, but his 13 goals were not enough. He has since done the rounds playing and coaching on the south coast and in the south west, and was very much McMenemys right hand man. But I bet to this day the Villa is one of the first results he looks for.

It's scary how many of these I remember as young men are now getting on. Heroes shouldn't be allowed to grow old.

I found it scary when I first heard the name Tom Hateley mentioned on the radio playing for Motherwell. First case for me of grandchildren of players I have watched now turning professional.

My favourite kit (long sleeve preferred), and probably the last time we went for six or so years without modifying much beyond the socks. Though having said that I think 66-67 saw us wear blue shorts at home.

I queued up at VP to catch them after training to get that Typhoo photo signed, but it took so long to get the damn thing that Hateley had left. Sob.

Ian Taylor for me. There have been later players such as Mellberg and Laursen with an affinity but none with the connection to the club and the fans.

Fred Turnbull to me was a real Villa man. he was a consistent influence in our defence during the late sixties and early seventies and still at the age of 65 calls the Villa...we... while one or two of our ex players use the word ..they.. which I hate.

If anyones interested Fred runs a pub in West Monkseaton and is in good health. No McGrath or Barson Fred but proud to have have played for the Villa.
