Wolves away 79/80

I remember this game well as a youngster, as my recently departed hero, Andy Gray, was due to play against us and it was obvious he was going to score.

The game was also notable for a cracking equaliser from a very young Gary Shaw (possibly his first for the first team ?) and a great right hook by Brendan Ormsby !

Remember this one well. Seem to remember a fair bit of trouble after the game but then there generally was when we went over there.

Young Gary Shaw looks so strange wearing the number 11 shirt, as did Andy Gray is a bloody Wolves shirt. Not the greatest of games but just how good was Jimmy Rimmer? When we have these threads about Greatest Villa Keeper, there's little video evidence to show the youngsters just how great the man was. Those two saves were his normal standard, he really was that good.

If you listen carefully you can hear the Villa fans singing "Villa score, Villa score, once you get one you'll get more", a great classic that normally always did the trick.

Cracking find and posting.  I was at that game and remember it very well.  Wolves at the time, having bought Andy Gray, were full of themselves.  Villa were well up for it, with the nucleus of the championsip winning team having started to gel, with Kenny Swain having just become the established right back and, most significantly, Des Bremner in the side having bedded in immediately.  David Geddis was also in the side, a recent acquisition from Ipswich who did well from the outset but was then to be replaced at the start of the next season by Peter Withe, who was to become the "final piece of the jigsaw."

Note also then, no Tony Morley, and there can't be too much footage around of a Villa team with both Brian Little and Gary Shaw featuring together.

I forgot how strange Molineux used to look with that huge empty bank in one corner next to the South Bank.  In the case of Andy Gray, these were clearly times before many players didnt celebrate when scoring against their former team.

r

Villadelphia, you are right about Jimmy Rimmer, not only was he a top class keeper, he was incredibly consistent.

The best save I ever saw from a Villa keeper was in the first half at home to Anderlecht when one of their strikers was through and Rimmer twisted and turned to push it over the bar. Unbelievable save which I am unable to do justice myself. An away goal from Anderlecht would have completely changed the difficulty of that semi final.

Thanks for that, a great post. I can't remember seeing the footage before, nice to see Andy's understated celebration against his old club.

Think Ormsby should get a mention on the boxing thread
