From Lambert's comments, I wouldn't be expecting anything much in the way of new players.  It looks to me that Lerner has completely given up.

I dont think Lerner has given up on avfc.  When he first came in he went litterally all out to get into the top 4 and allowed MON to spend like crazy which financially crippled the club.  He doesnt want the same thing to happen again and wants us to be run like a proper business.  Im sure he wants to sort out the books first and then once stable will reinvest sensibly and not make the same mistakes as before.  Didnt we make like £92m in the 10/11 season and £83m of that was wages?  Thats not how to run a business now is it.

It's also down to Lambert. He's spoken about it having to be the right player in terms of attitude as well as ability. If he can't get who he wants I don't think he'll sign just to make up the numbers or to placate supporters. i think we just have to accept it will take more than one transfer window to get the squad that he wants.

It would certainly look that way if we didn't make more signings.

But you would have to ask yourself if that is the case what would be the motivation for Lambert taking the job other than we're a bigger club than Norwich?

That's my line of thought, too.

A failure to provide the money to improve the squad now would be very risky indeed. I hope it's a case of PL not finding the players he wants rather than Randy not being prepared to supply the cash.

I also wonder if it is one in, one out, and we're not making more signings until we have Hutton and Warnock moved on.

Although we obvoiusly need to strengthen the team/ squad, its important to bring in players who DO have the right attitude and build a team that plays for the club and eachother. We don't want to make the mistakes of the past.

Ive heard and read a few people say that it is a one in one out policy but it wont have a restriction on transfer fee's paid.  Wages is the main concern.  so basically, if we sell warnock for £2m, it doesnt mean he will be replaced by a player valued at £2m.  We could splash out £6m on  another player as long as the wage demands are in line with our structure.  How true this is, I dont know.

My gut feeling is that there is no fixed limit on numbers in/out or on actual transfer fees, but that there is a limit on the annual wage bill. So that if, say, Hutton and Warnock go, that frees up so much wages that can be allocated to say five players costing £5m in total fees, or two players costing £20m in fees, providing the wage limit is not exceeded.

I might be totally wrong.

Edit. I should type gfaster, already said by Rick.

Yep. Lambert knows exactly who - or at least what type of player - he is looking for. I like that certainty from a manager. Signing anyone, or deviating from a plan, is what got us into trouble in the first place - average sorts on big wages cluttering up the squad.

I still can't help feeling slightly impatient, but then I read West Ham paying £11m for Matt Jarvis and am delighted we're not looking at these kind of options anymore.

It's not a  case of "the squad he [or we] wants", but a squad that is strong enough to cope in the Premier League this season.  Our doesn't look strong enough, pure and simple.

It still doesn't alter the fact that he'll only sign players he wants, he will not go for a short term fix. I think we're still a little short but we have Gabby, Dunne and Albrighton to come back from injury and if we have to wait until January for further strengthening then I think we'll cope.

surely its impossible to divorce transfer fees from salaries - they are both integral elements of purchasing a player and in most cases the ruinous half. Well when you are AV that is. Dread to think how much we have wasted on fee's since the PL era began. Not part of this thread I know, but without someone coming in before tomorrow and with them coming in to it on the back of a great win, I'm fearful for our chances against Everton

If he can get Gabby and Albrighton back on form they will be like new signings after the last couple of years. Both are cracking players when in the right frame of mind.

Faulkner said this yesterday. There is a "wage pot" which has to be worked with. Dunne, Warnock and Hutton would have heafty salaries and it makes sense they need to go before we can bring in more of the Vlaars and El Hamidis of the world. Trouble is, who would want them?
