Best Villa Penalty Taker Seen
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:51:34 AM »
Over the many years i have been watching the Villa i have seen many players take a penalty. It got me thinking who was the best. For me it was a close call between Willie Anderson and Allan Evans. I went for Evans for the simple reason that i saw him take more. Stan Lynn i have been told was good, but he was just before my time.

Pooligan, I think I will go with Allan Evans too. He had a good shot on him and was a clean striker of the ball so I always liked him taking penalties. He seemed pretty calm too – when he wasn’t headbutting people, that is. I seem to remember him missing one that was saved by John Lukic v Leeds around 1979-80 but cannot remember any other misses.

In more recent times I generally liked Barry and Milner, and Staunton had a fairly simple technique too, which was probably similar to Stan the Wham from what I hear.

I was at Fellows Park in January 1971 – my first ever away game – and was to the right behind the goal when Willie Anderson missed a late penalty that must have been 5 yards wide in my 8 year old eyes. That miss just compounded a shite day out. My dad had to stuff me with chocolate on the way home to console me. I think that was the only penalty I remember seeing Willie Anderson take and can’t recall any others from that era.

Honorable mention to Phil King too – 100% record if I am not mistaken….

Stan Lynn, without a doubt.

(Although I do remember a local derby at home and Stan hit it with his usual ferocity, it was heading for the top corner and Gil Merrick went the right way. He didn't so much save it as the ball hit his fists and flew halfway up the Witton End Terrace! Can't remember the year but can still visualize it now).

Another old f**t here - Stan Lynn.  Stan the Wham as I seem to remember we called him.

My dad would have told you  Eric Houghton who allegedley ripped one penalty through the back of the net

Barry was pretty good. No silly run up or trying to place it. Just stepped up and smashed it.

I can't remember Yorkie missing many.

And without a doubt, the pee take on David Seaman and the winner at Sheffield United in the FA Cup were sheer class.

I always had a lot of faith in Sid, although I remember him missing one at Spurs in the title winning season.Platt wasn't bad either.

Yeah Pat,i was at that Walsall game and i remember that penalty miss and as you say,it was well off target. It certainly brought us down to earth,as just a few days earlier we had beat Man Utd to get to Wembley. On the subject of pens, who is the worst penalty taker you have seen? Southgate is mine.

Technically, no. He missed one in the League Cup game with West Ham that was replayed.

Was it Platt who missed one against Wimbledon and City at home in the 89/90 season? Cost us dearly in the end.

Dean Saunders took a good penalty, especially in March 1994.

Shaun Teale took two classy penalties. Staunton or Yorke i reckon.
