While I don't want McLeish I will back him. Lets be fair he must have balls of steel to take the job on. It will be easy to get the "we don't want a bluenose" fans onside just slag of blues at the press conference and all will be good !
I doubt there would have been this uproar if we had appointed him twelve months ago we would have been saying he did a great job getting the scum to 9th on limited resources and think what he could do with Randy's money.
I don't really see this as different to any other managerial appointment except in the sense that the board will have no choice but to back him big time. If he is a success we will all be happy, if not he will the sack and we move on.
I am still clutching at the straw that the press have it wrong and we will come out and say we interviewed him but decided he wasn't the man for the job

Here's my 'reading between the lines' idea of what happened:-

When Houllier left we wanted Moyes and to also had a chat to Ancelotti, but got knocked back on both counts.

So we started looking around, which lead to the Rafa interview, approach for Martinez and McLaren.

Something happened that made us think Moyes might be back on.  This lead the Mysteryman's 'meltdown' comment and those rumours he had resigned from Everton.  I'm guessing this was a strong belief we were getting him, so told Shteve not to bother.

When this then did not happen, we were left up shit creek with the paddle stuck up our collective arses, so jumped at the idea of McLeish as the timing was right and he was seen as Moyes-lite.

I think you miay be correct. Although it is possible the McClaren interview was cancelled partly due to the backlash, and when Villa thought there were still other better options in the pipeline. But when they dried up it was too late to then interview him, and they went down the AM route.

if true why would they cancel interest in mclaren but not martinez?

There was not the same backlash against Martinez, and he became one of the better options.

It's reported that his Dog shit salary of £800,000 pa was due to be halved because of relegation, I assume that we'll match that at the very minimum.

Amazing what money could do for the durability of your gonads, I doubt there would be another club out there as stupid as us, willing to pay him top dollar.

I know Premiership football in general rewards failure, I had no idea we were so keen to emulate that.

Didnt like the scenes outside Villa Park last night, dont agree with Randys decission it will alienate a lot of fans. Not looking forward that much to next season, will he bring his backroom staff with him or will he work with Gary Mcallister. Where does Sid fit in?Will I renew or go to selective matches???

Probably right John, but to aim for Ancelotti and end up with McLeish is a comedown of fucking gigantic proportions.

It's a bit like chatting Megan Fox up at 8pm in a pub, then at 2.30am outside a nightclub, you're on your way home with Olive from On the buses.

It's worse than that. It's like metting Rachel Weisz at a bar and finding out you've got so much in common and there's real chemistry there. Then, on the way back from the bogs, dreaming of what the night and the future might have in store, with butterflies in your stomach, the room starts spinning and the next thing you know you're waking up in Magic Johnson's bedroom with a sore arse with bottles of Rohypnol and Viagra next to the bed.

I think the 800K isthe halved salary, ie he had been on £1.6m before relegation.

Bringing peter grant , andy watson and dave watson with him as his coaching staff reportedly-no idea where it leaves sid and co.

faulkner getting married on sat and mcleish reported to be heading back to corsica on holiday after press conference so id imagine theyd prefer to do it today.

:(

Time to lose myself in the cricket. Or at least the BBC / Cricinfo text update of it.

You're right, sorry.
He was on £1.6m, relegation halved it to £800k.

Is there another club out there as stupid as us, willing to pay him such high wages on the back of abject failure?

Found some comments I'd made a while ago.

1. Moyes.
2. Coyle.
3. McLeish.

I would really love to see Moyes down VP. Failing that, Coyle or McLeish.

Seriously, Alex McLeish would turn us into a fighting team. He'd keep us up.

You can blame me if you like.
