This is a message to the fans of Aston Villa.

The Club has been reluctant to elaborate publicly on our search for a new manager and, in particular, to confirm or deny our interest in specific candidates.

This is not a new policy, indeed it is the approach that we have taken both in regard to managerial prospects, and potential player signings.

The Club understands that Alex McLeish is a free agent. We therefore intend to interview him imminently in order to make a decision regarding his candidacy to become Villa manager.

From the beginning of our search, we have set out criteria based on proven Premier League experience, compelling leadership, an ethic for hard work and, most importantly, sharing our vision for Aston Villa as we know that without a shared vision any appointment, however attractive, will ultimately fail.

Since 2006 we have approached our custodianship of Villa based on a broad-based strategy of significant investment to improve the squad, the training ground and Villa Park. We feel it is essential to select a manager who understands and supports our strategy for the Club to grow and to be sustainable. Otherwise, the natural tensions and competitive pressures that are involved with every season will ultimately cause instability and make continuity impossible.

We would, however, like to emphasise that in deciding to interview Alex McLeish, the Board has taken his tenure at our local rivals and the strong emotions associated with this very seriously.

We are determined, still, not to allow that three-and-a-half year post to disqualify him should he be the best candidate for the role of Aston Villa manager.

Where's that idiot Pelty?  I'd like to see him come out and defend this utter lunacy.

It's not the fact that he spent three and half years at Blues.  It's the fact that in that time, they played shit football, wasted money on shit players and got relegated twice.  How on earth does that make him the best candidate for the job?  All it makes him is the best candidate for Randy Lerner: out of work and cheap.

well at least Foster will be coming  ;-0

I doubt it.  Or if he does Pannu will make us pay over the odds.

Fuck.  Pannu is our best hope of stopping this.

Right then it's official from the club that they intend to interview a manager who has relagated the same team twice in 3 years, plays dire footbal and  was not even liked by the blues fans.

If ever there was a time for fans to get down VP and cause a stink nows the time.

Randy sir you are a genius.

I'd imagine we will have discreetly already talked and this will be just the finalities- seems we are not paying compensation and mcleish is doing them for constructive dismissal so he can walk away now and take another job.

It will go to court between him and blues next year and mcleish by taking this job waives any right to compensation.

Richard began said mcleish legally free to take another job .

If they back him in the transfer market it might work out, he is a very negative manager in football terms on his form with Scotland and Small Heath, not sure how he played when he was at Rangers with more at his disposal in comparison to his opponents.

This isn't a positive appointment but the board have to be allowed to appoint whom they best see fit.

I'm not going to make threats about not re-newing because I'm 99% certain I will. However, I think this is the biggest risk Lerner has taken since buying the club. The only way the appointment will be accepted by the vast majority of Villa fans will be a top six/seven finish and or silverware. I truely hope that this is the case.

If he doesn't acheive that then we will be in this situation in a years time probably minus Downing, Bent and Albrighton. There is no way the fans will allow him any sort of mediocraty. The biggest puzzle for me is why turn downMclaren because of the fear of fan backlash to go and recruit the manager of our most hated rivals, of whom he presided over two relegations. Madness in the extreme.

I sincereley hope that this is doesn't happen, however I am inclined to thinkit will and that makes me disappointed than I was when Sir Graham went to England. Gutted.

We won't need to sign any of their players, give it six months and you won't notice the difference.
Today is the day the board lost the fans.
