i must admit i think maybe i dismissed mclarens achievements too lightly, at the time i was thinking bigger names but with the likes of martinez and grayson , i think mclaren would maybe not be as bad an option after all.

McClaren, you have to be joking.  The man has been in the right place at the right time throughout his career except the obvious one but there again Sven turned the same team around for a while.  What has he really achieved and is he in touch with the current PL.

People say he did a great job as coach at Man Utd.  He walked in on a team that within a few months won the treble.  I cannot remember them changing the way they played in those few months.  Likewise in the following two years, that Man Utd team was at the top of the game, even I could have coached them and got the same results.

He then moved on to Middlesbrough and, bank rolled by Steve Gibson, had mixed results.  It is often mentioned that he won the League Cup and reached the EUFA Cup final but what about the other times.  Let's not forget how much money Gibson was throwing around in those days compared to other clubs.  People seem to remember the great come backs in the EUFA Cup but what about when they lost to us 4-0 at home and being mauled 7-0 by Arsenal the same year.  They did not exactly play exciting football apart from those great cup comebacks.  Many people have said that Middlesbrough's success was more down to Gibson that McClaren.

The less said about the next 18 months with England the better.  It is amazing how the press are making out now that it is only the 'wolly with the brolly' episode that is clouding Villa fans' view of him and how hard done by he is because of it.

On to Twente and I will not deny he had a lot of success there but it was not as if he had built them up from nothing, they had been there or thereabouts for a few years.

On to Wolfsburg and he walked into a team that was a bit in disaray a year after winning the title.  He did not show any of his 'famed' coaching and managerial skills as it lasted only half a season.

People say that GH had been away from the PL too long before he became our manager but Steve McClaren has been away for 5 years compared to Gerard's 6 years.

I think Steve McClaren doesn't have what it takes to be Villa manager.  He has been in the right place at the right time for most of his career and has been over hyped by the media based on his connection with Man Utd.

It is a definite NO from me.

bloody hell grayson is even less proven than martinez- where will it all end ?

what has randy got against mark hughes? Give fayed a few grand and get hughes rather than someone who is not proven at top level- this is all becoming farcical.

No not quiet - I'll be honest, I didn't know his record in France - I knew he had managed in France, but as many games as he did.

However, the point still remains - when he took ove Arsenal, did you say similar to the following sentences

1. Arsey Who ? - who the hell is that

or

2. Oh yes, they have hired Arsene Wenger, the old Monaco manager, who won the cup and went to Japan and blah de blah.

And if you say 1 - you are a  liar

I'm guessing grayson is linked because the press are assuming all the candidates on the shortlist are un-proven non-entities like Martinez. I hope they're wrong.

I dunno, it would be a gamble but Owen Coyle had only managed one season in the Premier with Burnley before Bolton snapped him up and Everton took a gamble on Moyes and it paid off for them.

Personally i think a couple years down the line would be the right time for Grayson, but it's an interesting choice and might be an inspired one.
