I am stunned Benitez does not appear to be on our radar.

And how do you know he isn't?

We play our cards close to our chest and he may even be up for an interview this week. Nobody knows anything. Well other than the managers getting interviewed and senior figures at the club.

I'm stunned anybody wants him.

Why?

or are we talking about a different Benitez to the one who's been managing at the very top of the game and competing for the highest honours for the past 10 years?

Now Ancelotti's out the picture, he's by far and away the best appointment we've been linked with.

A man on the way down, not the way up.

From Houllier to Benitez, out of the frying pan and into the fire.

He's only 51

the only way he would be on the way down is by going from Inter Milan down to us

to be fair benitez spent the last two years at pool managing with his hands tied behind his back with gillette and hicks for owners

You could argue that applies to any candidate from one of the top European clubs. Anchelotti, Rijkaard, even Hughes (Man City).

But they didn't force him to play weakened sides at home and blow the title or loose his head over Fergusons wind ups. And he didn't have his hands tied at Inter.

It will be another "I've managed the best, now I'm at Villa, shoulder shrug after defeat" type of affair we've just had 12 months of.

There is a counter argument of course, but I get the same feeling about Benitez as I did the previous manager, if he comes to our club I don't believe it will work.

I'm hoping that this is the same as when we thought Curbishley would take over ,and G H came from nowhere to get the job. Randy keeps his cards close to his chest,so maybe there's a leftfield candidate we haven't thought of...or maybe that's wishful thinking.

Does pep guardiola fancy a challenge?

Exactly.

That's why we should think long and hard before appointing a 'stellar' name.

Annoys me how they ask on the radio ex players for their opinions.

Cascarino today s 1st words were 'Villa are not a great club'. Sorry mate but you weren't a great player

Cascarino, just like curbishley annoy the hell out of me for their lazy pronunciation of birmingham.... Oh sorry birminum. That alone is reason enough curbishley should never be aloud anywhere near Aston Villa. Never mind the fact he's a shit manager

As, I think, I posted in the other place, he's top of the pile of targets according to someone with better contacts at the club than thee and me.

To be fair, i heard Cascarino on TalkSport this morning, and he said Villa WAS a big club, and called us THE midlands club.

Alan Brazil, and Andy Gray have been talking us up as well.

I am warming to Benitez, but still expect Moyes or Hughes to be appointed, and i would'nt be too disappointed with either.

But none of us should feel "not too disappointed" we should be excited....
