Now M. Houllier has officially gone, I'll remove him from the poll and reset it.

Why on earth is it so far fetched for Aston Villa to attract a top manager ?

Why can clubs far far far smaller and with less finances (Roma, Shalke, and many many others could name) seem to believe they can be the best - but one of only 24 clubs that have won the top prize in European football always think they are a mediocre club that will never be a top club.

I don't think its far fetched but if Villa got Jose Mourihno I don't think he'd be it for the long haul, and of course it wouldn't happen.Mark Hughes would probably always be looking at the United job, Moyes is probably looking for a bigger step up, Benitez could be like Houllier was-a Liverpool love in.I'm really warming to Martinez-he's got something to prove and plays nice football which Villa have been trying to do of late.

His record for picking up bargains in the transfer market is not too shabby either.
His record for wasting astonishing amounts of money when he is given an open cheque-book is pretty eye-opening as well though.

Genuine question, as I can't remember too many of his signings; who did he sign who was a waste of money?

Massively overpaid for Lescott who was definitely a player Hughes wanted.
Wright-Phillips, Santa Cruz, Adebayor...

When he pays smaller amounts (McCarthy, Samba, Bentley, Kompany) he seems to do a very decent job. But it's not like we have a chairman who doesn't give the manager the money that he wants to spend.

Hmmm. I'd say that's a about as mixed a bag as you'd expect from most managers. An awful lot of money for Lescott, true, but then City were desperate to get Champs League and would have paid pretty much anything for anyone they wanted.

The cheaper players listed there, though, were very good signings for him.

I'm still warming to the idea....

I wonder what CA or any other manager would think if a club came after him with a current manager in GH's position?  The situation with Gerard has had to be resolved before anybody can be approached, particularly as the previous manager has just settled in a  tribunal against the same club (trying to put it in as neutral a way as possible).  Having just been bounced out of Chelsea, Mr Ancellotti might look askance at a management who - apparently - have issues with two coaches from the last 10 months.

And that's not a criticism of the Villa Board, because the circumstances are well known to us.  Just, looking at it from outside, it might look different.

I hope that the club have managed to settle honourably with GH today as his health remains the most important factor in his future, and the club need to think of everybody's best interests.  I wanted him to stay but I haven't seen the medical evidence that is available to the club.  Knowing the management as we do, I find it difficult to believe that they would have encouraged him to leave the job they had backed him to do so enthusiastically unless there were significant reservations about his ability to continue.

If GH should not be manager under these conditions then I think it's vital that his tenure is closed satisfactorily for the reputation of the club before they start announcing interviews for the next guy.

Is that for real ??

Who was spending money in 1996-1999

er.......

Man Utd spending 30m quid on anybody who had a foreign passport

newcastle breaking world records for anyone who could hum the tune to fog on the tyne

Arsenal attempting to be Barcelona (hmmm wonder where I saw that before) by assembling a galacticos of world talent (as well as the England captain that we sold a few years before !)

Oh, we then have Leeds bankrupting themselves by spending multi millions - yes Leeds got CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI !!!

Our own mr Houllier spending 7 figures on players like Emile Ivanhoe !!!!

shall I go on !!!

It was bloody more competetive then than now for god sake !

I still want Ancelotti. If you want CL then you have to aim for the best. I just don't think he wants us, and though I'd want him, I'm not entirely sure having him now is good for either party given the work ahead.

Wouldn't be surprised if it is Hughes now to be honest, unless the Moyes stuff is a smokescreen.

Spot on!! Why some people are trying to justify that he hasn't done well at previous clubs or play good football is just beyond me.

It's not that he can't attract some relatively big name players, or that he hasn't done a decent enough job where he's been, just that there are candidates out there who can say the same and more besides.

If Hughes had been available before we appointed Houllier then I'd have preferred Hughes.  But this time around there are more and better candidates than him.

Feel free, but if you want to make some reference to the two years before (1994-1996) which is the time you were talking about originally then that'll maybe give your argument a little more credence.

Kompany, Lescott, Kolo Toure (pre drugs bust), Zabaleta, Barry, Nigel De Jong, Tevez. Even if he did overpay for a few of them (Lescott and De Jong in particular) it's a decent success rate.

Bellamy was a big part of his side and contributed during his time there. Ditto Given.  The only real shockers I see there are Adebeyor, Bridge and Santa Cruz, and they'll probably still get a decent return on Adebayor should they sell him.

Robinho happened on his watch too I suppose, though the common consensus is that was the owners vanity buy.

Oh Ok - so you want me to go back two years to 1996.

So take all the clubs I just said, as they were spending just as much in 1996 than 98

But also add Blackburn and Middlesborough as well !!!

Apparently we've missed the boat on Hughes with no compensation.

I would love David Moyes, but i dont think he would leave Everton for us, so i would settle for Hughes, who was harshly treated at Citeh, and would relish being at a club villa's size and spending power

I particularly like his grammar.
