Anyone know where on William Hill I can place a bet on the next Villa manager? Can't seem to find it anywhere, surely they've a market for it?

Look at it from the players' point of view: would you rather see someone of the calibre of Ancelotti or Benitez - who have both won the Champions League in very recent memory, among numerous other things - or someone like Moyes or Hughes, who have done solid but unspectacular jobs and never won anything?  And then think of it from the point of view of our possible transfer targets: would they see Villa as a more attractive destination with Ancelotti or Benitez in charge or with Moyes or Hughes?

Well, it depends on how the new manager gets on with the players.  An Ancelotti/Benitez may be aloof and disparaging as they are used to working with better, whereas a Moyes might spend more time working with them and form a better bond.  Not to say that WOULD happen, but I don't agree that just because of a managers record he'll automatically gell the dressing room - look at Houllier!

The players you talk about them attracting would obviously be good, but would they also be within our budget?  Would never having needed to before mean they would struggle at the next level down where you need to find players who can do a good regular first team job for £5m?  Again, not saying it's impossible, but it does raise a question or two to me.

Regardless of whether it's a Moyes or an Ancelotti though, guess it's the usual case of welcoming them on board the good ship Villa and seeing what they do!

Ancellotti is the dream manager. Gets on with players but knows where to draw the line. Would love the freedom of picking players he wants to play and buy. And the high profile manager we are crying out for at this very minute. His knowledge of players in europe is impeccable. And he can attract them. Also think there is a lurking desire to show the rest of the premiership managers and certain billionaires what he is capable of with a team who are desperate for success ........

Appointing ANY new manager is a risk, in terms of how they will interact with the existing squad.  Therefore it makes sense not to second guess any of these things and appoint the best manager you possibly can.  And Benitez and Ancelotti are demonstrably better managers than Moyes and Hughes.  At least that's how I see it.  I can't see anything to recommend Hughes / Moyes over Benitez / Ancelotti.

Can't help with William hill but I've had ancellotti at 20-1 on paddy power (bit more in hope than judgment). They are offering the following odds:

Hughes at 6/5
FSW at 3/1
Moyes at 4/1
Martinez at 15/2
Mcclaren at 9/1
Bradley 16/1
Jol 20/1

Or the return of MON at 33/1

I got Moyes at 9s last week, purely on the value aspect. There's not a lot of value there at the moment.

They are usually a good guide.  If Ancelotti suddenly moves up to evens I will get excited!

Ancelotti please.  Appointing a big name rather than a Graham Turner-style appointment (someone like Lambert or Grayson) might help persuade our bigger names to stay and get some more through the door.  That's what we need right now.  If they get poached by Juve or whoever in two or three years time it'll be because they've done a good job and turned the club around.

Plus it would keep Ray Wilkins off the telly.

Ancelotti would be my choice but I don't know what the chance of getting him is.
Whoever it is I hope it's someone who excites us and they intend to be here for several years (and will have the balls to keep the egos in line).

As a slightly bonkers outside bet, Paddy Power have Rijkaard at 40/1

Some doubts aired as to what calibre manager we could attract. IMO looking at this position from a managers point of view, surely this has to be the ideal job.

Owner who sets out very few limitations (wages bill to be governed by turnover)
Owner who does not appear to have a problem making transfer money available as long as the wage bill is controlled.
With a reduced squad, new manager will be free to bring in several players of his choosing, without the need to sell first.
In comparison to many clubs our list of underperforming overpaid players (still at the club) is quite small

I just get the feeling that Ancelloti / FSW/ and Moyes will see Hughes as favorite and will be getting very edgy. Expecting to see many hats thrown into the ring over the coming days.

And Benitez and Ancelotti are demonstrably better managers than Moyes and Hughes.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the crux of my argument is that the success the likes of Benitez and Ancelotti have had is with clubs a level above where Villa are right now, so would that success translate?  As track records go, Moyes has done more in similar conditions to what our new manager will be presented with.

And I'll say it again - I'm not putting any of this up as conclusive proof that someone like Moyes is right, just that it isn't as easy as saying "He's won the CL so would be great for us!"  I think it's more complicated than that.
