I want a manager who is desperately hungry to be a success. To prove everyone wrong around him and that has a pedigree in the game already that he can attract good players and coaches to work with him. That he is bitter enough with others that he wants to build something in order to metaphorically kick the doubters and critics firmly in the nuts.

Mark Hughes wouldn't be my choice neccessarily for manager, but you have to think being from the Fergie school, and being canned by Man City as they were climbing rapidly that he might have a lot of the above in him. I thought Dave's comparison to Saunders was quite interesting.

As uninspiring as many will see the appointment of Hughes it is a sign of where we are in the grand scheme of things and the desire our owners have to instil some stability into the team, at a time when we’ve had a manager that’s only lasted a season, following the last one walking 5 days before the start.
I think the only thing that we need to consider in an appointment is, can he develop our kids so that we stand a chance the next few seasons of competing once more for a Europa League place? Let’s face it we had our chance at a Top 4, blew it and now that boat has well and truly sailed into the distance (as it has done for Spurs, Everton, Newcastle and Liverpool for the time being).
I’ve mentioned earlier that we need to make some kind of statement of intent about where we see ourselves going, but we’ve also get to size up the risks of getting in a big name who will see us as a stepping stone to bigger things(something incidentally that Hughes has clearly done at Fulham). As attractive as Ancelotti may be, can anyone honestly say that they believe he’d take the job on for the long haul? As much as I’d personally like Van Gaal for his ability to develop youth players, I fear that the same would also apply to him too.

Put yourselves in the shoes of Randy right now and separate the emotional Villa response we have as fans. Ask yourself in all honesty what you’d do to protect your investment? Hughes is the equivalent of buying gold in times of crisis, he’s stabile, grateful, will avoid a nosedive and possibly might win the League Cup...... I’m not a gambling man myself so if I were Randy I’d go for Hughes.

Ancelloti at Villa is about as probable as Messi.

We need to get real - we aren't a big enough club, we don't have the resources to tempt him.

Last week he was not ruling out West Ham. They might be in That London, but they're also in That Championship

I think he's the safe option and given the turmoil of the last 12 months would you begrudge the board the safe option?

Just checked out a fukham forum and most of their fans are upset , they say he has them playing good football and villa are a midtable club and no better than fukham.

I understand the stability argument with Hughes, but he'd be joining us after less than a year at Fulham. So, if he's wildly successful at Villa, why does anyone think he'd be likely to stay with us if a bigger club came knocking? The answer probably lies in the 'wildly successful' bit. He probably won't be. So, stability, mediocrity, call it what you like - that's what we'd probably have to look forward to with Hughes.

Is that really the case though?  The massive cynic in me says Hughes would be only about low-cost.  No/minimal compensation, possible re-integration of Warnock, Ireland and Dunne, thus saving the club several million in transfer fees.  I'd be hugely underwhelmed with Hughes, I have to say.

Four years ago the champions league was a realistic ambition , now though with the money at man city , and the gates at utd, arsenal and chelseas cash it is only a pipedream and unrealistic without massive investment to expect anything other than europa league at best.

Not so sure.  We're in that '2nd tier' of clubs, along with Everton, Spurs and now Liverpool, chasing the CL places.  If one of those jobs comes available he won't be in the reckoning, like for instance he's not been talked about in relation to Chelsea.  Similar to MON, he, and Moyes for that matter, wouldn't get a bigger club, so I wouldn't fear him walking.
