Given that Hughes is out of the race, I'm not too underwhelmed by Martinez. It might also be a short cut to N'Zogbia.

I agree JJ. I don't think it is Martinez and I still reckon a name may emerge today or tomorrow who none of us has really considered. No evidence for saying that, just a gut feeling...

Ancelotti failed to deliver? He finished second in the league this season and won it the year previously.

You wouldn't want him as Villa manager?

well yes he failed to deliver at Chelsea, thats why he got the sack,

but yes obviously i would like to see him at Villa, but he's the only one on that list that i would take above Martines,

Ancelotti 'failed' because the owner is a c*nt.

He did a good job.

Dave whelen:
"wow, that was a close call. Just about staying up on the last day. I can't afford for Wigan to go down. I can't afford to sack Martinez either. Hmmm I know, I'll say he's a great manager, who will one day manage a top European side. That way some one will approach him, and pay ME compensation for taking him off my hands.... If only I'd kept potato-head."

In all seriousness, I really don't know how to feel about Martinez. Could be an inspired appointment. Could be a bag of crock. He hasn't done anything to prove he is a top manager. But he does have a good style of playing football and a good ethos. Is that enough for a club like Aston villa? No it isn't. But he has got potential.

Phew to no McClaren, Hughes and FSW.

The Wigan fella has passion and potential,  but he nearly got them sent down - so no.

Pat Murphy seems to forget that while FC Twente was a good run for McClaren, he blew it at Wolfsburg, kept his job at Boro more thanks to the former "Best owner in the league" rather than his skill, even Boro fans were amazed when he became England manager.  And dont start us on about that Pat, he had the supposedly "Golden generation" and couldnt qualify out of a medium at best group.

I think his time at Boro was a bit hit and miss - various poor league placings, yet won a trophy and got to a Euro final.  He got the England job on the back of his work as Sven's assistant, more than by what he did at Boro, although that Euro final was very well timed for him in that regard.  England was a disaster for him and he then took a big step to rebuilding his reputation at Twenty, which then took another knock at Wolfsburg.

At best it's a middling CV punctuated by the England disaster.

So it was Martinez who was on holiday that we are now talking to, not exactly the "meltdown" news that was predicted.

Only a lunatic like Abramovich or somebody mentally ill or with unreasonable standards would claim Ancelotti failed at Chelsea.
He'd probably have won the league again had he been left to manage his own way and not have decisions made for him.

Actually ignore that tweet, nonsense, he's made up so many rumours up in the past two days.

Agree with that. To be honest i'm not that bothered how he did for England - there's plenty of decent managers who've made a hash of managing the national side - Graham Taylor and the present encumbant spring to mind.

Here is the thing. Martinez wasn't on most people's top 3 list - probably. But one by one the allegedly top of the list were either not interested or not interesting to us.
* Hughes seems almost MON'esque in his attitude and arrogance - Randy didn't want that trouble.
* Ancelotti not interested in ANY job at the mo.
* Rafa - allegedly arrogantly making demands that showed that the money is the key - go to Real, Chelski or City then...
* Schteve - Randy seems to actually listen to the fans.
* Moyes I think is waiting for a different job - not us

So.... What do we expect the man to do? Can he do anything right?

People dreaming of Van Gall and the likes - not sure at the moment Villa can attract such managers due to last season's performance and future funding availability and (sad I know) not being a London club.

If we are takimg a chance I'd rather take it with a young, hungry, even unproven manager. Martinez ahead of the likes of Curbishley, Mclaren, Allardyce - every day, for me.

Thinking about it, the best way Martinez would work is with a DOF involved.

don't get me wrong, if he comes he gets my support n may surprise me, gregory did.

But martinez must be the most uninspiring appointment since turner. I honestly think he is popular coz of his name.

Wigan are not a relegation side, they were continually mid table under bruce. He has took them over n escaped relegation twice by the skin of his teeth

If his name was Bob Martin, would people be as happy.

At least he aint mclaren but with the people available, or possible from other clubs , nah, sorry.
