It's good to remind ourselves we're ace once in a while.

For anybody going on holiday to Lanzarote this year (and perhaps Danlanza can back this up) , in airside departures on your return journey, right up the far end of the airport is a pub/bar called the Carling bar. Obviously aimed at striking a chord with British tourists and squeezing the last few Euros from their wallets, it isn't cheap but it does have something going for it.

While you might expect a Brit-themed bar to have the usual array of donated Man U / Liverpool / Celtic / Rangers shirts pinned up to the ceiling, in fact there are none.

There is however a solitary framed, signed, shirt on the wall to your left as you walk in.

And it's one of ours.

I used to work for a company based just outside Monza.

On the day I left in 1997, I stuck this sticker up on the inside of one of the boss's PA's cupboards.

They company closed down last year, and the sticker was still there, having reminded my former colleagues of the claret and blue for the intervening 15 years.

Interesting. I went to Lanzarote for a week at the start of last year & am sure I remember reading something some connection between their Tourist Board & Villa shirt sponsorship??

You could be right.

I assumed that because the shirt in question was from the Carling cup final, that would be the link.
Having said that, if you were going for the populist vote, wouldn't you stick up a Man Utd shirt? Like I said, there are no other footy tops on display in there, and after all, we didn't even win it.

Absolutely correct and i think Ian Taylor donated it. Don't quote me on that but i think it is the case. There is a photo, signed of Ian Taylor in my local, The Inn Place, so it could have been him. He has his arms around a couple of Kitstealers in the bar, wearing his Villa shirt.

That is correct. A bloke called Daniel Trigg, Head of the Lanzarote Buisness Association went to a convention designed to bring more awareness to Lanzarote from the English tourist industry. While he was there he had meetings with representatives at Villa about this possibility. As of yet we have heard very little about the outcome of these meetings, but we live in hope. One thing that has happened though is Cardiff City using Puerto Del Carmen's teams for scouting. They have also donated quite a large sum of cash for youth development for the younger teams.
Another encouraging thing is that two English brothers have become first team players for our main side on the island, UD Lanzarote, the first English lads to ever play for the team. Ryan Macphee aged 21 and his brother Jamie aged 24 are getting very good reviews in the local press and have had a number of bigger Spanish teams watching them closely. I know their Mom very well and she is very proud of them both. Good level headed lads they are aswell.

Is that the new den? Maybe the worst place in the world for the old 'oh is that a West Ham shirt' line to pop up.

The shirt looks better without the latest fly-by-night betting outfit plastered across it.
