Having said all that, despite all the rugby, cricket, mountain biking and skiing, my only major head injury occurred as a result of a quiz. I was pushed off a stool and suffered a concussion.

I am not, however, advocating that all quizzers should be helmeted.

Who'd make it mandatory, though? Is there a ski police?

Tbf, usav isn't perhaps the immediate oddball he might seem. There's a world of difference between the rammed McDonald's ramps of European slopes and the wide open space of many in North America, where the only other person you might bump into all day is Ian Astbury.

I’d say the lift operators. However, in France, they can’t even be arsed to make people fill all the seats on a chair.

Also, it could be made a requirement of insurance that helmets must be worn. If it was shown that a person wasn’t wearing a helmet, any claim would be invalid

25% of head injuries on the slopes are caused by collisions. These represent 11% of all ski accidents. Source: my insurer.

Helmets* are strongly advised.

Well, I gave my helmet a test run at the local ski place last weekend and I have to say it was no different than wearing a hat.  Super light, comfortable and glad I now have one.

Off to Whistler on Friday - can't wait!
