The problem is not that sayings don't often translate (they usually do); the problem is that the translators are usually shite. FSW is just speaking his language and these lazy twats aren't correctly rendering what he says (they are just doing a literal translation of an idiomatic expression). Now, this isn't likely to happen with Houllier as he used to be an English teacher. However, if he were less fluent in our tongue, he might, for example, be reported as saying "I don't think the Reds are really under beautiful bedsheets." and everybody would laugh at the silly frog.
