This appointment is vital, it's not just about getting the right man it's about getting someone who'll get the fans back onside. Alot of fans are disillusined at the moment, we're perceieved nationally as about to go back to where we belong into upper-midtable obscurity.

Whatever we think, this sense of delfation is certainly going to be felt by the players. Ashley Young is not going to stick around if we appoint Bob Bradley or Alan Curbishley.

Billic, Magath, Pellegrini, Klinsmann or Sven - any of those would be decent choices, IMO. And not just because they're foreign. I'd have been happy enough with Hughes had he been out of work still.

Which De Boer brother was coach of the Netherlands team alongside van Marwijk this summer?

One of them (not sure which one) was/is meant to be a Villa fan. At least I recall reading that a few years ago. Could be bollocks of the highest order though, alongside the 'George Weah is a Villa fan' legend.

Speaking of Dutch managers, Huub Stevens might be worth a shout.

Managed to a high standard in Holland and Germany with PSV, Cologne, Schalke and Hamburg amongst others and is currently in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg. He's been able to work on a budget previously (if we are saying resources are stretched - and I'm still far from certain that is the case) and I'd say he might just see Villa as a step-up compared to his current club.

The big advantage of KM even Bradley is that they are safe bets not to show Mon up I'd guess.
Much better for some than a known experienced option, but I doubt  RL thinks on those lines

From The Guardian:

Quote
Kevin MacDonald remains the frontrunner to become the new Aston Villa  manager, despite Sunday's humiliating defeat at Newcastle United, and will be given the two matches this week, against Rapid Vienna and Everton, to prove that he is capable of doing the job on a permanent basis.

Although Villa were thrashed 6-0 at St James' Park, Randy Lerner, the chairman, and Paul Faulkner, the chief executive, have treated the scoreline as a freak result. MacDonald impressed in his previous two games as caretaker manager, against West Ham United and Rapid Vienna, and Lerner and Faulkner believe it would be unfair to disregard those two performances and judge the 50-year-old purely on the basis of a woeful afternoon at Newcastle.

MacDonald will have the chance to turn things around against Rapid Vienna in the second leg of the Europa League play-off tie at Villa Park , and against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday, in what effectively amounts to a two-game trial. Two positive results and MacDonald, who stepped up from his duties as reserve-team manager when Martin O'Neill resigned five days before the start of the season, will almost certainly be offered the position.

Although Lerner and Faulkner have faith in MacDonald and admire his work behind the scenes at Villa over the last 15 years – he has played a key role in developing the youngsters who have broken into the first-team during that period and is regarded as an excellent coach – their willingness to give him the chance to prove himself as a manager is also a measure of the club's lack of options because of the absence of any outstanding candidates elsewhere.

There has been no shortage of interest in the Villa post but the two managers who would have been strongly considered, Mark Hughes and Martin Jol, are already in work, at Fulham and Ajax respectively, and regarded as out of reach. One school of thought is that Villa might try to lure Jol if Ajax lose their Champions League play-off tie against Dynamo Kiev – they drew 1-1 in Ukraine in the first leg – but there is no indication that such a plan is in place at the moment.

MacDonald has yet to confirm whether he would be interested in succeeding O'Neill – he has hitherto expressed concerns about how the job would impact on his family life – although Villa are reasonably confident he would not turn the opportunity down. Lerner and Faulkner will, however, have a problem on their hands if results go against MacDonald, especially as the plan is to have a permanent manager in place by the end of next week, when there is an international break.

The Mail had a similar piece yesterday.

I reckon it would be a mistake going with Kevin Mac and writing this campaign off as a season of transition (transition to what, 6th - mid table?) so this would concern me.

I'd also be a tad concerned that they're banking on Kevin Mac taking the job and will only start looking next week if/when he says no.

"OK Kev.... Would you like two million quid a year as manager, or the chance of being out of work this time next week?"

I don't know, I reckon he is more-or-less guaranteed a job for life working with the kids if he wants it. Whereas, if he is full-time manager, he is likely to get sacked any time. Admittedly, a million quid or so pay off would probably soften the blow but I doubt he'd get that. Ireland was on a 4 year contract at £80,000 a week and had to make do with a £1million-ish pay-off (poor lamb).

Most Premier managers aren't on wages that high... MacDonald as a novice certainly wouldn't be.

I'm stunned that Bradley has even been mentioned at all.
like i've said before if you pick the likes of him then you might aswell go for a lower league coach. I'ts a complete pisstake for a club of villas stature to be considering him (if indeed the rumours are true). I live in the states and its been mentioned enough to make you believe theres something in it.
You would have to question a club that appoints a coach from a country where the sport is 4th or even 5th in terms of popularity and the standard in general is quite poor in its pro leagues. rant over

I'm going to put Carlos Queiroz on my list. He's just been suspended by his FA, he's really pissed off and he may just fancy a change of scene.
Whilst I do have reservations about his leadership skills, I think he'd love it at Villa and I think we'd love him too.

Bradley's comments today sounded like someone who was touting himself to the English market.

"I'm here! I'm available! Choose me!"

I think/ hope we'll be going for someone who doesn't need that kind of self promotion.
The US connection makes it an obvious link. So obvious that newspapers and other media outlets have put 2+2 together and made 25.

They ask him about it and naturally he say's he wouldn't mind that kind of gig. So the thing takes on momentum. But crucially he says he doesn't know RL personally and hasn't been contacted about the role. That bit tends to get overlooked though.

McLeish was asked about the Villa job two weeks ago and started fluttering his eyelashes and talking in riddles when -if ever there was a guy who you feel was in a position where he needed to give a flat out 'no' - it was him.
