I remember most of these teams from my excellent fold out subbuteo catalogue from the 70's illustrated with all the teams you could buy - oh and Racing White, PAOK Athens, AEK Athens, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Cagliari (Anglo Italian cup regulars) were probably included.

I think PAOK (Salonika) and AEK Athens are still considered part of the 'Big Four' in Greece. Olympiacos have tended to win the Greek league over the last decade, but I think Panathinaikos won this year.

Think Cagliari are top flight?

Dusseldorf aren't and I've never heard of Racing White.

FC Valur (icelandic) in 1981, my first ever experience of a european tie at B6.

A Belgian team who I think played in Europe a few times in the 70's.

Fortuna Dusseldorf are in the second division, but they have slipped as low as level four (Oberliga Nordrhein).
Little known fact, Fortuna Dusseldorf were once sponsored by German punk band Die Toten Hosen.

Didn't Racing White rename themselves as Molenbeek?

Vitoria Guimaraes.

Remember seeing Peter Withe score a hattrick against them in a 5-0 win (1983?)

Never heard of them before or since

Portugal's 4th biggest team, although there is quite a gap to the big 3. And Boavista, which gets a mention from somebody, went under a few years ago.

There was a great run of teams in my formative Eoropean Cup final years of the late 70s. Borussia Monchengladbach (sp?), Bruges and Malmo.

I'm not sure whether I am impressed with your collective knowledge or whether you need to get out more.

I remember Villa getting beaten by a Deportivo team containing an unknown (to me) Rivaldo and being absolutely disgusted.

Probably the best ever away performance I have seen at Villa Park was Celta Vigo.  Again a team of unknowns (apart from maybe Salgado) that ripped us a new a-hole.  I vaguely remember villa fans applauding them they were so good.

Happy days...

Ahh yes Mostovoi and Karpin led us a merry dance that night. Think Makelele also played for them at the time and Haim Revivo upfront who Gregory then became obbssesed with buying for the next 6 months.

We played them again in the Intertoto in 2000 (remember the ref?!) and Gregory then became obbsessed with signing Benni McCarthy for the next year.

They were in the champions league in 03-04 but the money run out and they're now yo-yoing between La Liga and Segunda.

In the 90s Paris St Germain were quite a major european team but I can't remember them being in any major euro competition lately.

I lived halfway between Coruna and Vigo in 05/06 and though I regularly went to Depor games, I bought a Celta shirt in admiration of their performance against us in the Uefa Cup. They finished 6th that season but have sadly been in decline since, finishing just above the relegation zone of La Segunda the season just gone.

Oh, and from Channel 4's early 90's Serie A coverage I do miss Igor Shalimov's Foggia, Thomas Skurahvy's Genoa (wiki says he owns a nightclub there now, fair play) and Cremonese's...whatever
good player they had.

Oh and the C.I.S at Euro '92 with Dmitri Kharine in those fecking tracksuit bottoms (not as bad as Kiraly's jim-jams but still..)

Kinda sad that on any one forum of the clubs mentioned in this thread, they could well be wondering the same thing about us.

Except for blose, the baggies and the dingles obviously.

R. Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium.

It had a brief spell of European success, playing the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup between 1958 and 1965.

Now languishing in Belgian Third Division B.
