We could just about scrape that together if we sold Luke Young, Beye and Shorey.

Who needs full backs.

I saw that on the 'FANS AST' app on my iphone this morning.  Not sure there's much in it, but aren't Fiorentina supposedly after Big John......?

Its also worth noting that if you look at objectively, Laursen and Bouma ultimately failed to hack it physically and retired early, whilst Mellberg wound down his contract for a massive deal from Juve. Not a single penny returned in transfer fees.

That's absurd.  What happened to Bouma could happen to any player.

Winding down a contract and moving on for nothing could apply to any player we sign.

Laursen was bought, presumably, with foreknowledge of his injury record.

None of the above issues have any inherent link to the fact that they were three signings from abroad.

You only have to look at our foreign defence when MON came in

laursen 3m
olof 5.6m
bouma 3.5m

and what he spent on poorer british versions.
Davies 8.5m
Knight 3.5m
Shorey 4m

You’ve carefully omitted the money he spent on Britons like Dunne and Cuellar. Not to mention that defender from that county off Somerset, Senegal, where that quintessential Briton Beye hails from.

He also signed a Welshman and an Englishman, the bastard.

i omitted them because they were replacements for his replacements

You omitted them because your attempt to caveat your spiel with "replacements", didn’t mask the genuine thrust of your argument, which was about O’Neill only buying players with passports that have a Lion and a Unicorn emblazoned on the cover, which is garbage.

Was Wenger being myopic when he built his team on signing the best young French players?

Bit harsh there, Villadawg, especially with Bouma who suffered a freak injury in a Euro game.  I suppose the issue with Laursen was that the injuries were why we got him so cheap in the first place.

It was you that wanted to compare the "spend" on those particular players.

Not only is it harsh on Laursen, who was superb for his fit spell, it is harsh on MON and the back-room staff in that instance, for getting what they did out of him.

Now we know how fragile he was, injury-wise, the management did well to get so many superb performances out of him.

The implicit suggestion that Laursen and Bouma ending their careers early through injury should be some kind of warning against signing foreign / foreign-based players is a bit strange.

Unless I'm misreading your point, VD?

*sigh* i "picked" olof, laursen and Bouma because they were here when he arrived and davies, knight and shorey because they were the first 3 players he bought who played in their positions. no sinister intentions and you could  easily do it with say dunne, cuellar and warnock but the prices would have risen more anyway due to the long time period between the purchases. bottom line is even with the latter 3 chosen, you can miss out in terms of ability and vfm if you buy mainly british based players

Was it last season our Player Liason Officer was told to get ready for tonnes of work with all the foreign players heading to B6? Is she still at the club?

She's multi-lingual.
What a fucking waste working for Villa.

From the Express & Star

Quote
Villa are weighing up a summer swoop for Anderlecht star Mbark Boussoufa.

According to Boussoufa’s agent Rachid El Ghazali, the claret and blues have been tracking the creative midfielder, named Belgium’s Player of the Year in the last two seasons, for over a year and are considering making an offer.

Anderlecht are resigned to losing the Dutch-born Morocco international, who is also interesting German duo Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen as well as an unnamed Spanish club, but hope to hold out for close to their current 10 million euro price tag.

The 25-year-old, who began his career at the world-renowned Ajax academy, can play in central midfield or on either flank which would make him a potential replacement for James Milner, should Manchester City break Villa’s resistance and prise the England star away from B6.

Boussoufa spent three years at Chelsea as a teenager between 2001 to 2004, something which could increase his appeal to O’Neill who traditionally tends to prefer buying players with experience of British football.

The diminutive 5ft 7ins star left Stamford Bridge to join Gent where he won the Belgium’s Golden Boot and both the national Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

He has enjoyed further success since joining Anderlecht in 2006, winning a string of awards as well as topping the assists charts with 16 in Belgium’s top flight last season.

O’Neill has yet to carry out any business in the transfer market this summer, with Milner’s future set to dictate the extent of his warchest.

The Villa manager has been told he will have to adopt a sell-to-buy policy to generate most of his funds and Luke Young, Habib Beye, Curtis Davies, Nigel Reo-Coker, Steve Sidwell and Nicky Shorey have all been told they can leave if the price is right.
