According to the Sky website  Villa , Liverpool , Sunderland  are interested in signing Paul Scharner  . He is out of contract having quit Wigan at the end of last season and is currently available on a Free . Would be a good signing as a Squad player ( Central or defensive mid-field )  imho and the price would definitely suit MON down to the ground ..........Godzvilla!

What sort of striker is Huntelaar?  What striker would you compare him to and therefore what would he bring to the villa team?

When he played against villa for ajax he was pretty useless I thought.

A goalscorer, mainly, which is why he's struggled to make the step-up into better leagues, his all-round game not being quite as good as his excellent finishing. A bit slow, though he has really good technique and is so calm in one-on-ones, though he's not likely to get too many of those in the Premiership with his lack of pace. He has been improving his game, though, so if his all-round play is good enough he'd be good as the one in a 4-2-3-1 - but not particularly great in a fluid 4-3-3 without plenty of support from the wings and midfield.

The sort that MON would never consider signing.

Had a quick chat with my *friend* and he didnt say much , but Keane is looking very probably..   Did mention might be something going on with Crouch, would be very suprised If we got both but maybe its definitely one of them coming..
With Keane looking favourite.

He's a tall player (about 6 foot) but doesn't play as a target man.  Good with the ball at his feet, as you'd expect from a Dutch international, and as someone else said a good finisher.  I think he has all the attirbutes to do VERY well in the Premier League.  A lack of pace could be true, but his game doesn't rely on pace as much as it does positioning, so it wouldn't worry me.  He did look poor for Ajax and then later when I saw him on tele versus Man U in the CL, but I think he's a brilliant player and for £10-12m I'd bite their hand off!

I'm also happy with the Bentley link as we need a right winger and he's as good as i can see coming to us domestically.

Just imagione Milner going, Ireland in part exchange, and then Huntelaar and Bentley, with us only spending maybe £5m on top.  We'd be looking a very good sign if that happened.

But I'm going to argue against myself now as I doubt we'll see Huntelaar coming to Villa Park.  I think the story of us being 'offered' him is more a case of his agent touting him around all the PL clubs, if there is any truth in it to begin with, of course.

Same here, he was also poor on the few occasions I saw him playing for Madrid & Milan.

The Dutch league is a strange one, probably not in the strongest five leagues in Europe but the top scorers always command very hefty transfer fees.

It would be a big fee for him again despite his lack of success since moving and I'm really not sure he's worth the gamble.

The problem with Huntelaar is that he's one of those individual talents who needs the collective balance of the team to be absolutely 101% perfect for him to shine. If it's not, or if it's not based around him, he's almost useless. A good player, but a really expensive failure in the Premier League, I fear, if he goes to the wrong club here.

Good thing we didn't get him last year. There was a bit of talk, and he looked quite good, albeit on Youtube.

Don't think he'd make it in the Prem.

7 goals in 15 starts for Ac Milan and 8 goals in 13 starts for Real Madrid.

OK, that sounds like they'd be mad to let him go, so it may have been during rotation games and therefore against lesser opposition, but I think it's wrong to think he's been a failiure since leaving Holland.

I think Huntelaar will have a better time in the Prem than Serie A, for example. We offer a far faster, attacking paced game. His movement is good, so he'd certainly get the chances and put them away. He'll have more goal mouth action, that's for sure.

My worry would be the games where we need 11 men putting a good shift in, and he disappears. That would be O Neill's worry too, I imagine. We for example couldn't carry someone like RVN, in the same way as Utd could carry him, and just let him do his own thing.

I'd risk it to be honest. Keane is 30 now, but Huntelaar still has room to improve.

BUT...If we bring him in and start humping the ball up to him and using him as a targetman, he'll fail dismally. He's actually good in the air, in the box. Much like Angel was, but that doesn't go hand in hand with being a good target man. When we kept trying to use JPA as such, he was poor. When we played to his strengths, he was great. We'd have to keep it on te deck far more, if we sign soeone like Huntelaar, and indeed, Keane.

Yes, thank the lord we didn't have him to take up Heskey's place in the team!

I think it would be crazy not to buy Huntelaar if he is available and wants to come, his finishing ability and craft in the box would be fantastic. Although, as has been mentioned, we would need to play to his strengths. We dont create enough chances for the strikers we have.
Its a belief of mine that if we had a midfield that created better chances for the likes of Gabby, Carew, god love him even Heskey, it would produce more goals. Midfield is my priority, rather than the much courted '20 goal a season striker'

I'd say that if the strikers had better movement off the ball our midfield would pick them out, so it's midfield I think is the priority.

In truth we probably need to improve both, but I'd concentrate on the forwards first!
