Disaster struck last week with a severe case of tendonitis in my left achilles. Was making progress in running faster and looked like my average pace for a timed 30 minute effort would be well under 4:30 per km but now haven't run for a week as advised by physio so a week of gentle walking and some aggressive achilles massage has followed. I hate being injured.

Sorry to hear that, hope it clears up soon.

In the market for some proper good trail running shoes, anyone have any experience with Salomon, Innov8 or any other trail shoes they can recommend? Need to get me through probably 1 off road run a week and a 100km non stop ultra in July so comfy and hard wearing. Not sure 1 pair will do that mileage but let’s see what you lot come up with.

Have a look at these. Getting good reviews most places I've seen.

I’d go for a pair of New Balance with Vibram soles. Great straight out of the box and handle all terrain exceptionally well. And you’ll get hundreds of miles out of them. I’ve also got a pair of Salomon speed cross 5 but they’re very aggressive and I wouldn’t want to wear them for particularly long distances

Well I would never have looked at North Face shoes so thanks for that. Now to see if they're available in the UK.

I've heard good things about the Speed Cross, why do you say they are aggressive? Is it the sole or the rocker?

The Salomon is a good shoe of course. It depends what the terrain is. If it’s dusty paths they’re great, but the lugs are quite big and I found they get stuck a bit on certain terrain. Just to give you an idea of how good the New Balance are, I’m trying to do all my Scottish hills over 2000ft and I always used to wear boots. But I tried the New Balance and I’ve worn them for every hill I’ve done for about 5 years (I’m on my 3rd pair) and haven’t worn boots since. Most of the hills I do now don’t have paths and they handle everything. Heather, boulders, scree, snow, and paths obviously. And they handle mega days easily. Me and my mate did a 50 mile/5000 metre ascent thing in 18 hours a few years ago and I had no problems. So vaguely similar to your ultra. I’m pretty certain I’d have got nowhere near in the Salomon

The ultra is the Carphone Warehouse Race To The Stones, mostly dry dusty paths with some tricky root & rock strewn sections as well as a few miles on tarmac.

In that case I’m sure the Salomon will be great. Hope it goes well!

Thanks, can't really imagine running 100km non stop just now but 16 more weeks to train for it!

Do you run with poles? If so any recommendations? Thought I'd give them a try around here on some difficult trails with average ascent of around 25-30 metres of ascent per km, anything to help an old paratrooper with knees that are shot to bits.

I’ve used poles quite a lot when I’ve been on the hills. Obviously you can’t run full speed with poles but for coming down hills they are extremely good and take a lot of pressure off your knees. I’ve got a pair of Black Diamond alpine poles but they’re quite heavy, mainly cos I do quite a lot of winter mountaineering so needed them to be stronger. There are lots of lighter versions you can get. Anything Black Diamond will be excellent. But yes from my experience with them I can still run very well and I’d definitely recommend them

I have a pair of North Face trail shoes that were recommended by a specialist shop here in NZ. I love them and have been wearing them for a few years. Very comfortable shoes and do the job.

Cheers all, the Vectiv's do get some good reviews & I do have some mid/high end North Face walking shoes that are fantastic so I'll give them a go, birthday next week so a set of poles may be ordered as well.

Be interested to hear your thoughts on them when you get them Jon. I'm thinking it might be an idea to swap running on the streets near where I live for the country footpaths now it's getting lighter in the evenings, but will need a decent pair of trail runners if I do.
