I'd imagine Las Vegas will have concerts and suchlike, too.

In any case, you make them spectacular as you effectively bribe the local populace to build/rebuild you an amazing stadium or threaten to fuck off somewhere else.

In the next decade London will be the new Los Angeles and owners will be threatening to shift the team to the land of jellied eels and historyless football clubs every time they want local taxpayers to fund a fancy facelift.

In one of the most overdue changes in sport, it's possible that the Washington NFL team could have a new nickname before the 2020 season starts

Can we start a petition to get Birmingham City renamed?

I've always felt both them and Man U would have have better served keeping their original names rather than being just another United, City. Shame!

As an aside I was disappointed to learn recently that Eintracht basically just means United in German.

Isn't the Chiefs another fairly contentious name?

Dunno, how do the heads of tribes refer to themselves, and do they mind the rest of us using the term?

It's an entirely different culture with its own set of social/racial issues, but I find it an interesting parallel all the same - I've supported the Waikato Chiefs (now the Gallagher Chiefs, sadly, for sponsorship purposes) in the Super Rugby down in NZ since I lived and worked in the Waikato region nearly 20 years ago.

Anyway the Chiefs branding is strong on the Maori symbolism and the concept of the tribe. The jerseys are often adorned with the Tiki (sacred Maori face carvings) and the motto of recent years is 'Chiefs Mana' - mana being the Maori/Te Reo word meaning, diversely, 'honour/authority/respect'.

As a white Kiwi on my father's side, I do have some mixed feelings on this stuff. On the other hand, the Chiefs - like all the NZ teams - do have a reasonably high level of indigenous representation. Which I can guess is very much not the case with the Kansas City Chiefs.

I've never understood the reason behind Exeter RFC adopting the 'Chiefs' name

Isn't the Chiefs another fairly contentious name?

It is lower down the list, I'd say. Redskins is the Native American equivalent of calling a Black person by the N word.

Chiefs could certainly be cultural appropriation, and worth considering changing. But it isn't nearly as bad as Redskins, imo.

Cleveland Indians are also looking into their name.

They've gradually phased out the racist caricature, Chief Wahoo but still try to justify the 'Indians' name by saying that it's a tribute to a former player of Native American origin.

OK, if that's the case, call yourselves the 'Cleveland Native Americans' and see how that goes down.

Back on topic.........here's the great Keith Olbermann on the Washington name back in 2013

The NFL did............nothing
