Not sure there was a stand out man of the match but I thought Kamara, Mings and Carlos were all solid. Also thought Watkins had a good game.

I thought other than getting done by the Everton player in the last few minutes, Cash had a fantastic game.

Thats better. Though the last 10 minutes was the most Villa thing ever.

Scores on the doors

Martinez - 8 not a huge amount to do but stood up well in those last few minutes with some key saves and time wasting.
Cash - 6 got forward well but caught a couple of times late on
I've had a busy day since the game, been flicking in and out of here, but has anything been said about Cash's injury? We scored our second, and he was over at the touchline trying to talk to Gerrard while clutching the back of his thigh when Everton kicked off, immediately switching the ball to his side. Not long afterwards he looked to be a total passenger, yet Gerrard was quite vociferously gesticulating at him in a "just get on with it" kind of way.

Think Gerrard said it was just muscular and should be ok. Carlos is the big worry.

Not as bad as I predicted/10

Still a long way to go, but a marked improvement on last weekend.

Martinez - Formidable, and SUCH a troll.... but he's OUR troll!   :D

Cash - Much improved defensively, with some great last ditch blocks
Digne - Good linkup going forward, but suspect in defense
Mings - Merciless. Our best defender.
Diego Carlos - Good range of passing and much better than last weekend

Kamara - Rolls Royce of a player. Broke up play and pinged some beautiful balls forward. Did think he got caught daydreaming a couple of times, and appears to lack pace when made to run. He is only going to get better and we will need to improve to keep him - A star in the making.
McGinn - God awful first half - Distribution of the ball woeful. Apart from one loss of possession which led to an Everton attack, thought he was MUCH improved second half.
Ramsey - Few good runs forward into the channel, but thought he got knocked off the ball WAY too much in midfield. Don't get the plaudits for his performance today - Thought he did 'okay'
Coutinho - Effort was there today, but no real end product. No doubting his talent but seems off the boil somewhat

Ings - Never stops running and chasing the ball/helping the midfield. His goal was class
Watkins - Monumental amount of running and chasing, and came away with two assists. Confidence seems shattered in front of goal - Couple of times rather than just hitting it, he took an extra touch and sent it wide, narrowing the angle. Needs to just not think about it and fucking hit it. He'll come good.

Buendia - My favourite player. A terrier in our side with quality to match. Everton couldn't deal with him, and surely deserves a start now.
Bailey - Unlucky to be dropped. Couple of nice runs, and with more composure from Watkins, could have come away with an assist.

All in all, an enjoyable day in ridiculous heat. However, Palace will be a different prospect.

Loved the 3 points always do so thank you Steven and boys. But bloody hell that was painful. Didn’t see any rhyme or Rhythm in that display. It was far too much Southgate type of football. Fullbacks standing wide 20 yards in opposition half and tapping it back. Not sure what Steven is doing or where he’s going.

I believe this to be an incorrect analysis of todays performance .

Yes. We weren’t brilliant but that’s harsh. I thought we were somewhere between okay and quite good.

We were OK, they were awful. A far better performance than the one at Bournemouth.

I thought it was cos he came back into the field from behind the goal why SG was gesticulating

It was chaos. He was crocked and Everton knew, so attacked down that side. He was still on when they almost equalised.

Can anyone honestly say we look like we'll improve on our final position last season? Too early to tell but I just don't see much evidence of a consistently effective way of playing.

Far too disjointed and careless with the ball. The moments of skill and winning-space that a player in a Villa shirt does provide are rarely anticipated by a team-mate.

If Everton are going to be lucky to avoid relegation, shouldn't we be wiping the floor with them instead of clinging-on?

We should easily beat last season't points and position I reckon. I don't think we'll ever be as bad as we were under Smith last year, or Gerrard for the last 10-12 games. Two games in and we've lost one, won one, with a big improvement this week. Not everybody's firing on all cylinders yet, but we've dominated possession in both games.

It's too early to tell, we've played two of the worst sides in the division and lost one and nearly dropped another 2 points but for a fantastic challenge by Mings. Until we create more on a consistent basis it's going to be a struggle, pretty sure it was 4 shots we had in the opening 70 minutes today. Against a side I think could well go down. We need Buendia starting and carrying on with his good form.

Or put another way, never in the history of Aston Villa have we ever had such a talented squad. It's his to make it work.

On the first goal, doesn't Tarlowski look horridly unsuitable to playing LCB in a three? Letting Watkins control the ball under no pressure and run into the box unchallenged to pick Ings out.

I also think Mings had a very good game and Carlos a pretty good one. Yet I don't know how to square that assessment with the mayhem that ensued in our box after every cross/corner. It wasn't just at the end, it was consistent chaos the entire match.

It can't all be Digne's fault.

I disagree - I think we'll get better. The game yesterday showed glimpses of the future: the central back 3 of Mings, Carlos and Kamara looked solid, which meant that McGinn, Ramsey and Phil played further up the pitch - in the first half, I thought Phil played well, and Ramsey and McGinn did so patchily.
Second half, Ramsey became more influential, McGinn upped his game - the best he's been for a long while, I thought - and Buendia made things tick more aggressively when he came on.
The big difference was that Watkins and Ings both worked their nuts off and were looking for each other when one had the ball; a huge difference from last season. I was hoping Watkins would get a much-deserved goal to help him build his season .... next time, maybe.
Overalll, I thought we played well, in the main.

Pleased with the win ,made hard work of it though.
Mings was absolutely fantastic and the Holte End  got right behind him, absolutely superb.
Thought the front two worked their socks off and a great goal from ings.

Buendia has to start next game
