On the criteria chosen by Mr Russell I would go for Villa v Ipswich in 1976. A dreary 0-0 snooze fest by two inept teams. The game was so tepid that the main talking point was a flock of pigeons encamped on the pitch in the second half, a fact picked up by the Evening Mail.

In the final minutes in the only action of note, Chris Nicholl hit a bazooka from 35 yards which hit the bar and Andy Gray went in for the rebound and booted the Ipswich keeper in the face. Play stopped for several minutes and he lost a few teeth IIRC. I can’t recall if he went off though as I’d probably nodded off by then.

Unfortunately there have been a few down the years but one that springs to mind is in the 88/89 season at home v Charlton  a truly awful game which we lost 1-0 with an absolutely shocking Charlton winner. Still have nightmares about it

I’m a Villa fan, the list is far too long to even think of one particular game. That said I seem to recall a particularly dreary 0-1 loss in the last minute to Middlesbrough in the early MON years. Virtually nothing of note happened in the game in the game other than it absolutely pissed down in a howling gale for the whole game and where me and my son used to sit in L8 wasnt best protected and we were soaked to the skin. It was awful.

In a similar vein mine is probably Wimbledon away at Plough Lane in Oct. 1990, a sparsely attended 0-0 draw. My only memory is two drunk blokes down at the front singing "Jozef Venglos' claret & blue army" for 90 mins much to the bemusement of the solitary copper watching.

Notts County away in 1992. It was bloody freezing, it was 0-0 and we missed a penalty we were inexplicably given.

Worst game of football I’ve ever seen was York City 0 Darlington 0 at Bootham Crescent in division four in 1993.

September 1969...Watford 3 Villa 0.
Favourites for promotion at the start of the season. An absymal performance, the Docs magic touch has gone and we have utterly fell apart. We get relegated to Division 3 at the end of the season.

Travelled from Belfast ticketless, paid well over the odds to a United fan and then watched supposed Villa fan Lee Sharpe put two past Bosnich. Two times at their height. Dalian Atkinson was immense that night in a 2-1 defeat. 1993 and it still fucking hurts.

Against Everton in 94 when the League cup was paraded was pretty awful. It was bouncing down during and after the match and I remember my brother's Evertonian mate saying "I forgive the players now" as we got drenched on the way back to the car.

Also Wigan away in the McLeish season, Bent injured after five minutes and fuck all else happened. Had been a great pre match, absolutely buzzing at kick off and had the life sucked out of us by the match.

Yeah that Wigan away game was dreadful but the worst I think for me was 16th Sept 2002....
