John Burridge 70
« on: December 04, 2021, 12:55:43 PM »
A bit late with this one, John Burridge turned 70 yesterday, made 80 apps  for us, winning the League Cup in 77, played in all 3 games. Also played for another 28 clubs!

Belated Happy Birthday Budgie.

Thought Budgie was great, a real character.

In John Burridge's autobiography he told a story about what a nervous flyer Ron Saunders was. So on any club flight Burridge would wait for Saunders to settle in and then Burridge would blow up an airsick bag and burst it as loudly and as close to Saunders as possible. Also at one point Burridge was sharing accommodation with Andy Gray and it was Grays job to keep Burridge's reflex's sharp whilst watching TV by randomly throwing items of fruit at him to catch.

I seem to recall there being a good deal of excitement and expectation around the signing of Burridge, and I remember him as a decent keeper, his weaknesses being in dealing with crosses, but I don't recall any glaring errors.

A/n upgrade on Crumbes but realistically too small for a top class keeper and was found out a few times.  I still think if we had Rimmer in 76/77 we would have won at least another pot.

I remember The Guardian in the mid-90s describing him as offering freelance goalkeeping

Made a great penalty save against QPR in 77 semi final and then let in a soft goal 2 mins later. Great night at VP though

It certainly was, although the replay at Highbury was truly a classic Villa night.
