“I recently read, Gangsters, Geezers and Mods by Stephen Pennell. I did it in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down. The introduction alone (the longest sentence in a book) made me brim with pride to be a Brummie. By chapter two, I’d welled up and laughed out loud which became a theme throughout. The factual parts become so mixed with the imagination of Pennell’s genius I found it hard to distinguish between the lines. Growing up in B6 (Witton not Aston, a big deal if you grew up there 🤣) I related to so much of this book that, for me, it’s a Catcher in the Rye or To Kill a Mockingbird, maybe even Kes. A really gritty, down to earth drama that touched my very soul. If you’re not a great reader of books then this one is the one to truly test you. It’s fun, it’s emotional and it truly hits the mark to the working class of the Birmingham that I relate to and have always loved. Kudos, Pennell. You broke my heart and fixed it again several times during this book. Also has a twist that you think you see coming but don’t. Can’t praise it enough.
