To hear (and I can't confirm the facts of this) that John Terry sat through the whole thing talking would make me very unhappy. I hope it's just a nasty rumour.

That's what it looked like on the television, in fact the whole Villa bench and coaching staff looked totally disengaged from any tribute that may (or as it looked may not) have been taking place.

Everyone of them were chatting whilst applauding. Dean Smith too.

Disrespectful twats all of them.

To be fair to all of them it wasn’t ‘during’ the tribute. It was in the build up to the tribute. The tribute didn’t actually happen because when the ref blew to start it the players scattered. It is pinpointed by Steve Stride on Twitter as being Kasper Smeichel who broke ranks.

Hopefully we can do something more fitting at the next game or the end of the season.

The applause was a bit chaotic because it started before the announcer had finished the introduction, which happens a lot at Villa Park but not so noticeable at other grounds. The players then moved away thinking the whistle was the end not the start. It did continue around the ground for a while though.

The former players should have been at the centre of it which would have made it more formal.

It was an appalling tribute to our greatest ever manager. Made me ashamed. To the watching audience they must've wondered what we make so much fuss about for then produce that effort of a tribute. We never do ourselves any favours at the Villa, despite ever changing staff.

It looked to me like McGinn broke ranks. If they can't follow a simple one minute on the whistle instruction then no wonder we're in the mess we're in, and the players spent the afternoon showing no application, desire or hunger, let alone the ability to adapt tactics.

If the staff were yapping, then that tells you all you need to know. Bastards, get some respect or get out.

It should have been a minutes silence imo.  Far more appropriate and poignant.  It came across as amateurish, with nobody seemingly briefed about what was going to happen.

I don't blame them for not having time to get more flags etc made, as it was only last night.

The minute's applause was really badly done though.  The crowd started clapping when the picture of Ron went up on the big screens.  Then when the announcer stated that the applause would start and finish with the ref's whistle, it was meaningless as everybody was already clapping and you couldn't really hear the whistle.  All in all, undoubtedly well intentioned, but ultimately shambolic.

We fucked up something so basic as respecting one of our greatest managers.

Not good enough.

It was a shambles which set the tone for the day.
I really hope the club addresses this and soon.

It really shouldn’t have been that much of a stuff up. We all knew the day was coming , he was 87 with failing health, so some planning ready to go would’ve been what I’d expected. 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' and Man Utd do seem to do these things really well, it’s a PR exercise as much as anything. Ours looked half arsed quite frankly.

It was a total shambles that left me seething.
The greatest manager we've ever had to be disrespected like that was something I won't forget.
I do not like this minute's applause nonsense anyway, a minute's silence would have been far more appropriate and you'dve actually heard the referee's whistle.
Shame on you Aston Villa.

Agreed. And the TV footage of it looked terrible - Smith talking and looking at his watch, Terry sitting down, laughing in the dugout. Someone needed to tell them before they went out.

Saunders was 87 and in ill health so there's no excuse for not having at least something half decent planned as a tribute. It left a really bad taste in my mouth

I listened on WM and was left puzzled when the game kicked off so quickly. I don't think anyone was intentionally disrespectful but the organisation was half arsed. The problem with a minutes applause is that it is uncontrolled leading to confusion as to the start and end.

It's so sad that people are unable to observe a minutes silence due to the actions of a few clowns, we've effectively let them win.  I've said before that the act of keeping quiet for a minute is so much more difficult than making noise but then that gives the tribute itself more gravitas and is easily identifiable via the refs whistle. Never mind, it's done now I suppose.

I think a match dedicated to Saunders is the order of the day, perhaps towards the spring, a Sat 3pm KO. Keep any applause until the 80/81st minutes as yesterday, introduce the ex players etc and do it properly.

I've been to a number of games at our place when there's been a minutes silence and I don't recall any being disrespected.

For me, a silence holds far more gravitas and depth.

I agree with the sentiments about the arrangements yesterday, a complete mess and unbecoming for such an important occasion as Ron's passing.

I think for someone of Ron's stature within the history of our club, a silence would have been more appropriate.

I have this morning emailed the club at fancomplaints@avfc.co.uk to express my anger and disappointment at the Ron Saunders shambolic 'tribute', so I suggest anyone with the same opinion as me might do the same?
Maybe we'd get the club to do something properly?
