Had a look at Brighton's forum. One of their posts, praised our stewards when he just found out his dad had died 40min before kick off.

And another said if we had a forward then they would have been in trouble. Yes, Wesley can hold up the ball, but I think Davies needs a starting run in the team. But I don't pick the team

Just watched the disallowed goal on the Sky highlights.  In live play the commentator said "it certainly wasn't a foul", and as we were celebrating the goal their goalkeeper was gesticulating at his defenders and not appealing for anything. VAR is a fucking joke.

Villa have shown they have the character I believe, to stay up. Yesterday's match was very important for showing this.

I've got to admit if I was a player I would find it difficult to pick myself up after one of these VAR goal cancellation incidents. It's bad enough being a supporter!

Wesley has 4 in 9. That's decent for a 22 year old lad in his first season in both England and the top flight.

Bit premature to have gone full Stuart442 or whatever the anti-Benteke/Smith guy was called.

Alex Bruce.

Good point, this. In fairness, the team have managed to get it together and score again within minutes of having a goal VAR'd on both occasions.

The main lessons from yesterday were that with Hourihane: we go down to 10 men without the ball, because his tracking-back and positioning are shite (as are his energy levels)
Also , Wesley did well to set up JG's goal, and he would be so much more effective if the back four released the ball earlier to him, on the ground.  There's a very good player in there, but we are not playing to his strengths.
Most importantly, we have to move the ball more quickly, which means our players need to be on the move. Everything was too static and slow yesterday. Brighton showed us how it should be done.

I thought Brighton were very good for large parts of the game. We just didn’t get tight enough in the middle of the park. They waltzed through us too often. I know Connor is a goal threat but when he’s not he doesn’t do his other job well enough at this level. This is more important when Grealish is quite rightly playing a roaming role. He was excellent throughout today. A last minute winner the like Of which I can’t remember. So sweet.

Think we'll see Luiz starting v Man. City and Liverpool. Not sure who out of Conor or AEG you take out, I'd be tempted to leave Hourihane in as he's good at getting shots away around the box and we won't create too many clear cut chances against those two so set pieces will be important if we're going to score.
The problem yesterday andtoo often is that our midfield looks like Swiss cheese, teams as Brighton did yesterday just pass or walk through us with ease.
Conor can not do enough defensively, just not his game, so we need more presence in there and you would hope Luis is the answer.
I keep hoping that Smith would play 4 2 3 1 but he seems stuck on 4 3 3
Agree with Luis as extra cover.Smith 's tactics have evolved  with Jack playing a wide role with freedom to move inside, rather similar to Wenger's use of Pires. This gives a more  flexible approach in midfield and should provide more cover with Conor or Luis more deep lying than Jack.
It wasn't just Conor at fault,Marvelous went missing and AEG's pressing ,tracking back and overall  game went AWOL plus McGinn looked a bit tired.

.
Agree with the need for movement and quick passing.Brighton did indeed show us how it's to be done but their back four weren't passing directly to a front man, often it would  be channelled through Stephens or a full back and then fed through to others.Their movement off the ball was exceptional.Wesley himself needs to be less static. If it was a Bruce in charge,I would be concerned and I nearly wrote that we didn't lay a glove on them until the sending off. However, with Smith in charge, there's a pass and move philosophy.

I was just off to get myself my half time cup of tea but turned to see Jack Grealish score as I made my way. Great atmosphere in the queue! :-)

I hadn't really seen much of Maupay when many on here were raving about him over the summer. I wish we'd signed him. I don't get why we are not more in control when we have a solid keeper, two solid centre backs and a midfield that includes Grealish and McGinn. I still think Douglas Luis will be a big player for us.

Our shape was wrong and wasn't really corrected, and Nakamba letting the game pass him by didn't help.

He was the second-best player on the pitch.
