Villa v Brighton pre-match thread
« on: October 14, 2019, 08:05:46 PM »

And here we have yet another club who’ve spent most of their history in the lower divisions, then give them a few years in the Premier League and they start getting ideas above their station. Talking of which, if we treated away supporters the same way we get treated here, Brighton’s pitiful away following would be stuck on Witton station for two hours then crammed into one carriage of a train that went back to New Street via Wolverhampton. They’ve got a manager who did well in Sweden and looks like he should have been in The Office after first making his name in Grange Hill. They also have a collection of extremely obscure players.

What comes up must come down and Brighton have been up for far too long so it’s about time they remembered where they should be and accept defeat gracefully. Winning this one will help them get used to it.

Things newfooty fans don’t know – Jimmy Melia’s white shoes. And don’t pretend you don’t know about them either.

I don't know about Jimmy Melia's white shoes. I know that they're the only league team with four words in their name. Possibly. I haven't bothered to check this fact.

Win this and it gives us a bit of grace against M city and 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'

we've come unstuck this season already against Bournmouth at home and there's no easy games in this league but we really do need to win these home games against prospective bottom half of the league teams to stay up

Villa 3-0

Dave does your apparent disdain for Brighton have anything to do with blue and white stripes and the word Albion in their name?

Agree this is the kind of game we need to win and I think we will, 2-0.  Wesley and Grealish.

On paper, you have to say that this should be Villa’s game all day long.

Aside from at Newcastle where Bruce gave them 71% possession, they’ve averaged only 6.3 shots at goal per away game this season.  They’ve only scored 3 goals away, all against Watford, and even with the 71% possession at Newcastle they couldn’t score in 16 attempts on goal.  Overall, including home games, they’re averaging 0.75 goals per game this season in the league.

We’ve so far averaged 1.25 goals per home game, have a goals versus expected goals rate of 103.5% at home, and have averaged 13.5 attempted per home game.

I can’t see Brighton scoring more than one goal, but they do defend well away from home.   We have to take our chances and get a couple of goals.
