Leipzig away 3rd August, confirmed.

Chemistry Leipzig?

Sorry, I recalled a fact that there was a team in Leipzig with Chemistry in the name.  I found that they are BSG Chemie Leipzig which I realise is less interesting... <sad face>

Haha. No problem, mate. You had me searching on Google for your reference to chemistry. I just found something connected to the university chemistry department...

RB Leipzig are very controversial (and hated by fans of many of the more traditional teams). In 2009 Red Bull bought into a struggling lower-league Leipzig team with the aim of taking them into the top flight. Under Bundesliga rules companies aren't allowed to be owners of football teams unless, like Wolfsburg (VW) and Leverkusen (Bayer), they genuinely started off as works teams. Red Bull managed to get round this while the club was still in the lower leagues but they're still not allowed to call themselves Red Bull. So it shouldn't say "Red Bull Leipzig" on the Villa website. So that Villa are politically (and legally) correct, I've suggested that they change it to RB Leipzig. This is the name the club use. Of course, everyone knows that RB is really Red Bull, but officially it's a ridiculous made-up name, RasenBallsport Leipzig, which means "grass ball sport". The name is regarded with something between contempt and derision by the rest of the Bundesliga, but you can't ignore their success on the field. After promotion after promotion they joined the top flight in 2016 and finished 3rd last season, so we'll be playing a team that's qualified for the CL.

How have they managed to get round it? Do they not formally own the club but still pump money in?

Complicated! Red Bull have established a separate company, which owns almost all the shares and runs the 1st team, reserves and youth sides, but in apparent compliance with Bundesliga rules, which state that no individual or corporation can own more than 49% of a club, the overall club is run by an overarching organisation which is not controlled by Red Bull.

This may appear something of a fudge. Traditionally German clubs give the members a big say in all decisions. This has been one of the strengths of German football, as opposed to England. In 2017 Bayern Munich had 290,000 voting members, Dortmund 154,000. RB Leipzig had 920 members, 17 of whom had voting rights.

Well Chemie does translate to chemistry.  Not sure of any other teams named after school subjects.

It certainly sounds a fudge but as you say, you can't argue with the results on the pitch. Surely the neutral in Germany would prefer RB to Bayern even with this stretching of the rules?

That's a difficult one! Personally I think it's good that Saxony, in the old East Germany, finally has a top-flight team, but RB are generally disliked because their set-up contradicts the basic principles of the Bundesliga. I fear that some of the German Villans will boycott our game in Leipzig because they won't pay money to Red Bull. Bayern, on the other hand, are disliked because they keep on winning things. Their Munich stadium, the Allianz Arena, is nicknamed the Arroganz Arena.

As I've said in H&V articles in the past, Villa picked up a lot of German supporters in 1982 when we beat the hugely unpopular West German champions, Bayern Munich, to win the European Cup.

I am glad we’ve got a friendly in Leipzig. With work, I spend a lot of time out there with work and it’s a bit of a hidden secret of Germany.

RB Leipzig remains controversial within Germany, but I wouldn’t let it put you off. The city is full of parks, home breweries and cheapish beer.

The downside is that it’s tricky to get to. As my company have found out - we can only get out on the freighter jumpseat directly. There’s a flight every other day from Stansted with Ryanair.

Hotel wise, there’s plenty of options. We normally stay in either the Penta or the Marriott though. The Westin is used by our sister companies though.

If anyone wants any info into the city, please let me know.

Chris

I'd love, one day, for opposition fans to hate us because we win things on an 'all to regular' basis. What a 'problem' to have.

In about 1910 I imagine that all the others did hate us!

It tricky to get to but doable from BHX, and we’ve managed to get it booked relatively easily via Zurich. One the better things about Brum these days is the ability to hop around fairly quickly via the European hubs . I so wish we could qualify for the European competitions again. Little steps though first.

Bollocks. I haven't been to Leipzig before and it would be nice to catch up with the German Villains on their own patch again. Unfortunately I am on holiday.

Best other options from BHX:

Hannover, Berlin. Both have good connections on train - driving times are around 1:45 from both airports to Leipzig.

Nuremberg is pretty close too. Prague is equal distance to Berlin but takes a lot longer.
