Wasn't there a comment made that the throw-in was taken about 18 yards further forward than it should have been (by the corner)? Maybe that was the reason for such a high line.

I'd prefer it if our centre halves concentrated more on where the opposition strikers are than where the throw in might be taken from.

Yep, not much of an excuse really.  It was just rank bad defending from all involved, but especially Mings.

It is amazing how it works at the Villa.  We either cannot score for toffee but defend reasonably well.  We cannot score for toffee and cannot defend for toffee.  Or we become the division's free scorers and cannot defend for toffee.  This has been a trait for years and years.

That's not just us though. That tends to be what happens.

Still in our case we have a striker who's already near enough equalled the total amount of goals our forwards got last season after 8 games, but we're still shipping goals all over the place. We either hope and pray Ollie doesn't get injured/go off the boil or mebbe impress on the likes of Mings that marking is not optional in the Premier League.

Has it? Under Lambert, Fookin'eck and Garde we usually couldn't score for shit and weren't great shakes defensively either.

Surely that's covered by the 2nd option.

I omitted the one we never do.  Tight defence, free scoring.

I don't know if it's ever acceptable to have a defensive line 5-10 yards inside the opposition's half. Certainly not early on during a premier league game anyway. That kind of defending you would be pissed off seeing at pub league level. The fast forward running onto a throw in and skating clear to tap it past the keeper. Utterly ridiculous.

The odd game aside both Luiz and Mings particularly have struggled this season. I think that's a large part of our continued struggles at the back as we are much improved at RCB and GK. Whereas Luiz has been exposed a lot tactically (but is still being caught ball watching far too much for liking like the second goal), Mings problems are down to individual errors and rank decision making most of the time.

I don't think Luiz has struggled that much at all. He'll have games when he's not at his best but so far, to say he's struggled is a bit much.

we're a mid-table side - which means as a team and individuals we'll continue to be inconsistent.
if it means we finish somewhere between 8th-12th - then it's not the end of the world

Luiz hasn't caught the eye as much this year, because back end of last season he was getting forward a lot more and joining in with attacks.  This year he hasn't needed to do that so much with Barkley and Grealish in the same side.  He needs to protect the defence a bit more, as he's not as defensively minded as Nakamba, but is obviously a much better all round footballer.  He's only going to get better I reckon, unlike Mings.
