No one presses like Meatball. Don't think he has the discipline/legs for a general/defensive midfield role but he's not exactly a number 10 either.

Yes. We've tried him as defensive/ deeper midfielder with more discipline and restrictions but it doesn't suit his game.

He's better up higher up, with freedom to pick passes (or pick fights) as he sees fit.  El Ghazi's workrate as well as goal output have come on leaps and bounds this year. Trez was giving us plenty of workrate on the right earlier this season. Bertrand is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.  From the sublime to the ridiculous - sometimes in the same move.

Only he and Jack don't really put a shift in defensively. But Jack -if the ball is anywhere near him in the opposition half- is canny enough to nick it. And does so much with it anyway you can never countenance dropping him. Unless your partial to Burton waistcoats and horse biscuits, obv.

A nuisance of right sided winger with a blast of pace will help with the press and make us even harder to play against next season. Don't give the opposition a moment's rest.

That probably sums him up perfectly, and the reason I think he’s brilliant

I see he’s not travelled with the Scotland squad because of Covid restrictions

Precautions rather than restrictions, he could have travelled if Scotland had requested that he do so, he's had a negative test.

Great article here
Note the comments about not being deep-lying or being shackled by too many 'tactics'.

Due to a power cut missed the game, just wondered how SJM played.

Not one of his better games, still would have set up a goal if Lyndon Dykes was vaguely competent.

Very jealous of your power cut. ☹

Surrounded by players who some  aren't at English premiership level didn't help

That's just it isn't it?  Scotland lacked nothing in effort for which they have to be admired but, if you haven't got the players, effort alone just isn't going to do it for you.  Mother Hubbards cupboard I'm afraid.  I really wanted them to do well.

Remember the days of Billy Bremmer, Joe Jordan,Kenny Delgesh, even our own Des Bremmer, and of course Ken McNaught and Alan Evans and many more that graced the English game, sadly missing today, afraid looking at the Scottish game won't see that type of player again apart from mad John Mcginn

Steve Clarke got a bit tetchy when the post-match reporter asked him about the lack of energy during the game.

Their first 11 is no worse than about ten other teams in tournament. Robertson CL winner and first choice for top european club. Tierney is very good aswell but just moved to Arsenal at wrong time. McTominay awful today but regular for second placed team in league and we know SJM has limitations but he will hopefully be regular in top 8 team next season. Billy Gilmour is very promising aswell and will hopefully start v England.

All their great players in the past failed to get out of the group stages at major tournament just like this one will.

They lack a Bale type in final third but not really sure it's that much weaker aside from that (well o.k the keeper and right back were hopeless) than what Wales put out at Euro 2016. But they rode their luck a bit in the first game, took their chances and won and rode the momentum from that point while as ever Scotland do the exact opposite.

Czech republic hardly brimming with top class players themselves considering they had likes of Nedved, Baros, Cech, Rosicky 15 years ago.

With the chances Scotland had, they shouldn't have lost.

The thing is they do have some quality. Mcginn, mctominey, robertson, cooper che adams. These are not bad players. In fact some of them are very good.

Lovely article by Yaya Touré in The Athletic about the importance of using your bum in football. Obviously Meatball was his first example.
