Most home games in the last forty years aren't worth much and most dealers wouldn't buy them off you, unless it was part off a collection, with a few rarities in it.
I think most are probably worth less than face value.

The European games against Slaven Belupo and Ajax both sold out and got reprinted. I'm still seeking the home leg against Odense too.
Carew's home debut against West Ham caught the programme printers unprepared.
And the home game against United from their treble year I have seen go for £20+.

Really should kick the programme buying habit, but it just doesn't feel right if I'm not reading the manager's notes at 2:55!

I have the away surrender at CSKA programme. Not sure it's worth anything mind, it's a fairly shoddy programme.
Taking this thread back to the opening post, Dave Bridgewater did an article about the CSKA away programme (I think in the first Rapid Vienna programme).
The official programme in Moscow was limited to a few 100 copies because of some Russian tax regulations. There were half a dozen different pirate programmes all of which he had in the article.
I don't think it was worth a huge amount but probably one of the more valuable ones in recent years.
Does anyone have a pic of the official programme ? I'm wondering if mine is a fake ??

I'll try and dig mine out, which I bought myself outside the Luzhnicki Stadium before the game. It cost me about £4ish in roubles, and at a glance looks very like the Slavia Prague away game from that year. I think the pirate copies looked completely different.

A guy who worked with my Dad had no interest in football but his father in law who lived with them was a massive Villa fan. Back in the 3rd division days we would stop off coming through Gravelly Hill and collect him on the way to the game. He would tell us stories about Harry Hampton and him going to the 1905 FA Cup final. Whatever time we arrived he would be standing ready at the front window as we drew up and was straight out the door to get to Villa Park. One time we must have been particularly early and went in the house. I can still picture being shown his old programmes. Maybe 8 or 9 bound volumes of the Aston Villa News and Record all pre first world war, the first team and reserve fixtures and in perfect condition. If memory serves me I think he died not that long after he came with us to the 1971 final.
As I say his son in law disliked football. Apparently after he died he cleared out his room fairly quickly and took everything to the dump.

My own collection goes back as far as 1949.......not for sale.....not gonna try and go any earlier  although got a couple of bound volumes from 1927/8 and 1933/4.
1982 European Final pennant given to our Dennis proudly on my wall.

Those could be worth thousands. I would be making sure your contents insurance covers them.

Ive never forgotten turning down the chance to buy the programme that was printed when Villa Park had its record attendance something like 76500 against Derby County around 1946. A bloke in Kings Heath used to have a shop selling all kinds of things by the old cinema. It was in the window. Why I didnt buy it god only knows.

It was reported that a couple of days after the new board took over in 1968 a skip was being filled with 'rubbish' including bound volumes of programmes going back to 1908 and burned. One man was, apparently, shouting with glee "The Villa are dead. Long live the Villa." as he hurled these irreplaceable artifacts into the fire. Guess which ex-travel agent this was.

I bet so much history went that way when the club was in a bad state in the late 60s. You can imagine any new owners wanting to get rid of decades of "rubbish" from store rooms and hardly used offices. Wonder what else was chucked?

If you do have an extensive collection then it is worth getting them valued and making sure your home insurance will cover replacement costs.

The chances are that they will fall into the policy definition for high risk as the items are rare and collectable.

Your high risk limit is normally capped unless you choose to pay extra to up it.

I have dealt with many claims over the years where peoples HOUR limit is vastly less than the value of their items.

In particular this goes for jewellery.

I have on my living room walls some outstanding items which Reg Thacker was told to get rid off - ie skip Due to the destruction of the old Trinity Road stand. Reg contacted a friend/contact who took all this off the clubs hands some of which i bought, such as the pennants from the European Cup Final handed to Dennis by Paul Breitner, the semi v Anderlecht, the pennant from the Santos game back in Feb 72, this framed item hung in the home dressing room until it was just discarded. My personal favourite is a hand made one to celebrate promotion back to the old first division back in 1959/60....absolutely beautiful.
Also a framed programme cover from Santos game with Pele's autograph. Some great stuff.....shame i had to pay for it all!!!!

During the early nineties a lot of stuff was also lost because it was stored against outside walls in outbuildings at the North Stand and damp got to it.

What happened to Reg Thacker. I know he was the clubs archivist for a time. He would be in his late sixties now. Has he passed on Dave?

I know that up to a few years ago he was living a few minutes walk away from me in Selly Oak. May still be there ...don't know.

As far as I am aware Reg is still living in the south Birmingham area and quite probably where you mention, PGW. He will now be aged around 73. I bought alot of programmes off Reg over the years, and used to subscribe to him for the away programmes until he gave up that service at the end of the 2002/03 season.
