Dalian Atkinson
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:09:41 AM »
Was having a look at some old Villa clips earlier and came across these two videos.  They show some of the goals Dalian scored for Villa:

A real character, who had it all as a striker and on his day was unplayable.  Everyone remembers the goal against Wimbledon, but the two goals at Hillsborough that same season still stand out for me.  Shame we only saw the best of him for such a short space of time.

Could have been a world beater but couldn't be arsed.

Had so much talent, but unfortunately not the application to go with it. Recall reading big Rons book in which he said to Dalian at start of the season he can emulate Shearer in the scoring stakes and play for England. The reply was you pay me what he gets and I will. Another story big Ron told was when Dalian was at the Turkish club (cant remember which) and they were playing game against their biggest rivals.  The chairman said to Dalian he would give him a top of the range Merc if he got a hat trick. Dalian got the hat trick in first 15 minutes and couldnt be arsed for the rest of the game. That said, I still think we would have won the league under big Ron if he had not got injured when he was doing so well. As for his goals, I was there in the peeing rain at Selhurst Park v Wimbledon and it was a great goal

Atkinson is just another player in a list of under achievers we've had at the club. Majestic when he fancied it, infuriating when he didn't. Had he had half of Saunders work ethic he'd have been world class.

A shame he didn't have the right attitude and application because he certainly had the ability to be a top top player.

Still he was resposible for two of the finest goal celebrations I've ever had. The equalising goal against Tranmere and the first in the final against Man U. It took me til half time to finally get back to where I was supposed to be sitting. The old man thought I'd cleared off for a pint but I'd just launch myself over all the benches that we the seats in those days and ended up about 20 rows from where I started. Awesome

Could so easily have been the  best striker to come out of England - i kid you not

He had absolutely everything, the only player i have seen akin to him was Henry in his pomp but regrettably had an attitude to match

sad waste of a talent

Yep,more natural ability than any of his peers, but liked the lifestyle and pies too much. Stored in the 'What could've been file' with Collymore.

Dalian aka sicknote had bucketfuls of talent and when he could be arsed was fantastic to watch. I recall doing the double over ManU in the cup and league in one week (Deano scored in the cup) and the Witton Lane was full of Mancs for the cup game. Shame he never fulfilled his potential. They were great days back then and that team Big Ron assembled was great entertainment to watch.

On his day he was unstoppable. Unfortunately, there weren't that many days.

I was at both Sheff Wed and Wimbledon in 92/93 to witness 3 tremendous goals and who knows what could have been achieved that season if he'd have stayed fit. Together, him and Deano were great.

Special mention for his last minute header against Tranmere to force extra time at Villa Park. Possibly the most I've ever wanted us to score in all my years watching Villa. Anyone else remember his mazy run in the last minute of extra time in the same game ? He beat about 3 or 4 and was finally stopped by a tackle in the penalty area if memory serves me well.

Would have brought the house down if he'd of scored.

Two at Hillsborough were brilliant, also remember him saying that Big Ron had asked him to play a deeper role that day, only for Ron to suggest Dalian was a on a different planet (not in the footballing sense either). Does anyone else remeber that? Maybe it was just me!
