Very fair and even handed summary Dave.  I do hope it is read by one of the management team.

To be fair to Dean he stops writing down defenders name well before southgate does. Like you say four is enough. Perhaps we have found ourselves a new coach. Think of the money Dave ...think of the money !

Dean has changed the one thing that was so solid about the team.  Our defence was a thing of beauty last season.  Oh, and not signing a sold defensive central midfielder will come back to haunt him.  So often on Friday, we failed to get within five yards of Arsenal.  Some how John McGinn gave the ball away for their third goal, he was probably five yards goal side of any Arsenal player and yet managed to still not be goal side when they scored.  Shambles, and no wonder he an Mings appeared to be bickering.  Get rid of the zonal marking at corners too please.

I wonder where we would be today if we had never signed Stan Collymore in 1997.

We'd probably have had the same next ten years that we had anyway - a gradual falling away to mid-table then it would be our turn to fight relegation again.

Probably. I think 1996-97 was a bit of a step back from the highs of 1995-96 so we had already stalled. Those were great times though.

We needed to add quality in midfield was my thinking at the time not up front. Little did successfully replace the iconic Paul McGrath. But Townsend was 33/34 by then and Mark Draper (who had a great first season) had injuries/lost form. Curcic was a complete flop and so was Alan Thompson later. I wasn't keen on Collymore at the time but Little had to make a hard decision on him or Milosevic not unbalance the team to try and accommodate him.

The back three thing. It's not that it's a terrible formation end of - it's that it's a system that always requires exactly the right player in every position. Bielsa and Conte are two very different managers, but one thing they have in common is the relentless training and transfers approach to shape squads for which these eccentric set-ups become natural.

Other than that it can be a good one-off tactic like anything, but any fool that our squad is built to play wide attackers, and not to rely in decent enough full-backs to suddenly turn into Cafu and Roberto Carlos. It was one thing when Bailey was injured, but he's not now, and he's being kept out of the team by the formation, and as far as I'm concerned that should be the end of It.

Good and accurate article, but i would ask if we can see it why hasn't the manager seen it. We do not have wing backs we have full backs who are asked to do what they are not capable of doing. We have wingers so play them. I like that the players are angry, we might get a response this week.
