I can't help but think the design (if not the colour) looks like something you'd see on the side of a gurdwara. Not sure if I like it or not.

It might be that, but my take was that they were just using it to represent the home game at Villa Park before the new badge's unveiling.

I think the claret lion/150 Year Anniversary looks good at the top (in the same colours as the logo below).
