It's something I would have liked NOT to remember, but sadly you forced my hand!!

On the subject of away kits, the following season we wore our yellow tops and blue shorts at St Andrew's, so that's three different away kits in three consecutive games at the same venue, before all this shirt sponsorship business got started.

BTW, we won that game 2-0, so I'm very happy to remember that one!

That Birmingham line-up had four players who also played for us during their careers, though Malcolm Beard thankfully only played six times for us.

Met Malcolm Beard at an after-match trophy award 'ceremony' after an Erdington & Saltley U19s final. He seemed a good man with the knack of having something a little different to say to each young player as he handed the keepsakes over. This was about 1984 when I think he had some involvement in the Villa youth set-up.

He, indeed, didn't play many games for us and was often injured. I think he was a no-brainer signing as he didn't cost anything and Vic and Ron both knew him well.

He was chief scout I believe, and was also doing something in Brian Little's first season. Someone whose Villa knowledge goes back a lot further than mine said he was present at every Aston Villa disaster of the previous 25 years.

That's enough disasters for one career!
