I personally would be inclined to accept the apology of Pippa Mills if it had not had embedded in it the obfuscation that she was "required" to make it by the Eurooean Convention of Human Rights.  No.  The West Mercia police were deeply and very seriously at fault and dragged the case on for five years.  The apology would ring with greater truth and sincerity if it came clearly and openly as a confession of guilt offered voluntarily.

Yes the word "required " really shocked me when I read it.
Why pit that sentence in at all let alone at the beginning of the letter.

Yes, an apology given under duress, is no apology at all.

Did she really have to even mention the Human Rights convention? a man died through criminal actions of one of your officers.
For god sake show some common sense.
What a jobsworth.

Some other non-apologetic and missing the point gems:

"Ben Monk's conduct was in direct contradiction to the standards and behaviour of the policing service, and understandably undermined public confidence."

"I am deeply sorry for the devastating impact the actions of a West Mercia officer has caused you and I extend my deepest condolences to you all, and Dalian's wider family and friends."

Why can't anyone in authority ever just say: "Sorry, we were wrong."? No caveats, no bollocks about lessons learned, no one-bad-apple, no whataboutery. Just fckn own it.
