“There has never been a decent match between Villa and Stoke City“

Loved that.

And any wonder so many of us oldies had Hateley as our first hero.

This trip down Memory Lane doesn't lift the present gloom.I was always bewildered by Willie Hamilton's performances, amazing one week, dire the next.
His early demise in Canada gave a big clue and the reality was shown in a Jock Stein biography.Stein ,his manager at Hibs, described Hamilton as one of the most naturally skilful players that he had managed.Keeping him sober was the problem.

Yep, Willie had his 'refreshment' issues, apparently.

Going back to that Northampton game, I recall the winning goal coming from a 40-yard free-kick knocked into the area that reserve 'keeper John Gavan completely missed!

Memories, eh?!
