A tall story? How former Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis claimed he had invented the overhead kick to Peter Crouch when he signed him in 2002.

This has been debated many times, on many forums over many years.

To be fair, so has mostly everything.

Didn’t Ellis score or winner in Rotterdam?

Good to finally bring this myth to the masses, it's been kept amongst us for too long.

But have you heard how he compared thigh girths with George Curtis and concluded that they were similarly equipped?

Speaking of George, I went to a game at Gay Meadow when we invaded the pitch to have a go at the Shrewsbury fans at the other end, and he was laughing his head off. Strange days, those.

I’m sceptical. If Doug had invented the bicycle kick then he’d have patented it & charged royalties to any player who tried it.

Did Doug not once claim that many years back he had a spell on the books of Tranmere? Which seemed to come as some surprise to anyone who had an in depth knowledge of the history of Tranmere.

Danny Baker and Gary Lineker have identical scoring records at Villa Park.
