Brentford
« on: August 31, 2016, 12:51:45 AM »
We are home to Brentford in a couple of weeks and I was thinking that I couldn't remember the last time we played them in a competitive game. When I checked it was a lot longer than I realised. We played them in the First Division for three seasons either side of WW2 and an FA Cup tie that went to a replay in 1953. Six wins and two draws and that's it. They must have been in Div 4 when we were in Div 3.
This is odd as I think they have been members of the Football League for many years unlike say Burton Albion who we have yet to meet.
Does anyone know of any friendlies against them?

Whenever Brentford is mentioned I always think of Robert Rankin and his brilliant Brentford Trilogy. Also aren't they supposed to have a pub on every corner of the ground? Never seen them play the Villa, mind I'm only a youthful forty-five.

My barber is about 150m from their ground, and there is a pub on each corner, though one of them is probably 100m from the ground.

My last haircut was 5 weeks ago at midday and I was surprised to hear people singing the "Don't take me home" song in a slightly strange accent. Turns out they were Kaiserslautern fans (IIRC) who also play in red and white.

Whenever I think of Brentford, I think of their irrational and random hatrid of small Heath in the early 90s.

Also their manager now is a Villa fan.

A hatred of Small Heath is perfectly rational.

As to answer the OP, the only friendly was when Trevor Ford bagged a couple in a 2-2 at Brentford 13/03/1948 (a spare Saturday, FA Cup weekend I assume).

Never seen Villa there only Stockport County to watch my mate play - long way from the station - in their time have had some top players Lawton, Bowles and more.

Why do  they hate Blooose so much? Just interested.

I'm sure it stems from around 1992 when both teams were battling for promotion from the 3rd tier. Not sure of the detail but there was some beef.
