Good always overcomes Evil 2-1 1975
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:51:41 AM »
sorry if this has been posted before.

what a delight for me to see John Robson in action again, a very tidy footballer, Hamilton, Little, Gidman, Nicholl, Carrodus looked a grand side.

oh and what an appalling challenge by that Bluenose twat Kenny Burns....it's probably on their club honours board :)

Remember that game.
Dirty ba**tard Burns wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes these days.

Great finish by Little.

I remember Andy Gary saying that when he came out at half time the noise from the home crowd made him freeze he had never experienced anything like it
Estimated to be 55k in VP that game

Thanks a million for posting that. My dad couldn't go to that game and as a 12 year old wouldn't let me go alone, reckoning it would be too nasty. I had forgotten how good and versatile John Robson was - always remember him as a fine full back. And it was wonderful to see Leighton Phillips having a pop at Kenny Burns after that disgraceful challenge.

IIRC, that same day also featured the Merseyside and Manchester derbies, and we had the highest crowd of all, circa 53,000.

I took up my rightful position down the Witton End that day, refused to be intimidated as did my mates.  Did we have some fun after Little scored.  I have to admit it was safer then than now.  Could still get hairy though.

I may have posted this before, a friend of mine was diagnosed with MS and attended therapy sessions that included John Robson.  They struck up a friendship and used to go fishing together.  From what he told me, Robson's wife baled out on him and, by the time he died he was less than well off.  I have no proof of this only the word of mouth of my friend who I can't imagine making it up.

I remember a story, probably in the Mail, that he'd lost out on some investments and was skint.

The highlights are on one of the Big Match DVDs. After the game Brian Moore who was presenting the Big Match lays into Burns for that challenge.

Another great find, Doc. Thanks so much.

Like others I remember it well and remember the shock when we went behind as apart from the Centenary friendly game and first home game back in the old First Division against Leeds, I don't think I'd seen us lose at Villa Park, at least that's how it seemed.

Watching the highlights really brought it all back and even 39 years later I was still bloody nervous that we wouldn't get the winner. The other thing, apart from a beautiful reminder of Brian Little's feet was how Frank Carrodus was such an influential player for us.

As for John Robson, I don't recall him hitting many shots like that one but he was a great player for us. The last I heard before he died was he was living near Pype Hayes and basically skint. Sadly, even with a testimonial he never got the support a Villa player would get from the club today.

No matter what we do in the future I still say those days where the best ever and those players were laying down the stepping stones for that wonderful night in Rotterdam.

An amazing atmosphere my first ever Derby against small Heath at vp and it is still in my memory till this day.
In these days of loan signings ,Johnny Foreigner etc I doubt we will ever see a team of never say die and give it all for the shirt as we did in that era.

God bless you all from that era

 Thanks for that Dr B.

Not sure i was at this game, but some of my favourite all time players were in that team,Phillips, Ian Ross, Gidman, of course Brian Little, then there was the old guard of Chico and Ray Graydon.Nice times.

Any potential purchasers only need to look at the attendances of these games to realise how big we could become.

Brilliant video. Burns was a nasty piece of work. Great to see Sir Brian scoring the winner. I loved the team from the 1974-77 period, great memories.

Before I was born, but both the stadium and the kit look majestic.
