If you wanted to see how a centre forward should play then Andy was it.

It was nice to see the tribute Andy got on nine minutes.

Sad news but what great memories  he's  left us. So near at Wembley, iconic goal v Bournemouth and a favourite of mine,  his route one via Cumbes at The Holte End v Shrewsbury on the night of the black cat. Job done big man.

If I close my eyes I can still hear the smack of the ball on his forehead as he headed the equaliser in the semi-final against United. Great memories, and great times. He and Bruce Rioch epitomised the start of our return to the top

I'm trying to think of a player that played for us who, in such a short space of time contributed as much as Andy did that saw him leave with the status of 'Legend'.  As yet I can't think of one.

Seems bizarre that we have a stand named after a controversial chairman whilst the likes of Saunders and Lockheed go without mention at villa park.  A complete rethink is needed

Doug Ellis named the stand after himself, otherwise I reckon it would have stayed the Wilton Lane Stand.
I’m not really into stands being named after people as there are many worthy candidates.

I wouldn’t mind the new North Stand being named The McGregor Stand, though.

His widow Carole has set up a Just Giving page for The Alzheimer’s Society.

For those interested.

As a nipper who started going regularly in the late 1960s Andy Lochhead evokes many memories - my first big night at Villa Park was the 1970 semi against Manyoo where he headed us level, that undershot shot in the final at Wembley, the winner against Bournemouth and him receiving the Midland player of the year award before a 5-1 drubbing of Torquay.

Other than the Torquay game, the first 3 memories were all captured on tv. An abiding memory that wasn’t was the moving ovation he received when returning with Oldham, as a coach IIRC, just before we were promoted in 1975. In the final home match of that season against Sunderland , Doug Ellis, in a rare moment of grasping the mood of fans, said in his programme notes that his moment of the season had been the tribute that Andy Lochhead had received at Villa Park. I don’t think any returning player has ever received the same reception that he did that day at Villa Park and it triggers a happy memory.

Pat, the Torquay game was featured on Star Soccer in April 1972. This was also the first start for a certain Walker on Water. I don't know if the footage has survived.
